Just read Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb last night, after
nwhyte recommended it, and the news that she'll be a guest at London 2014. Very much enjoyed it, and tried to buy the second one on my Kindle at midnight, but probably luckily had forgotten our router and password have changed, so was persuaded to go to sleep instead.
I like Fitz, the main character, and I loved the way that a lot of the book was about him getting an education and would happily have read more of that, especially perhaps more of his weapons education with Hob, the woman-at-arms. The politics were generally convincing, and convincingly dangerous; like Fitz, I took a while to work out exactly what the plot was in the last section of the book, but it fit with the characters' motivations and abilities as already established. No GRR Martin bloodbaths, but people do die.
I don't know how original Hobb's work is, because I probably don't read enough fantasy, but certainly found this fresh and appealing, and have downloaded Royal Assassin this morning. Also I realise I've never read any Megan Lindholm, her first pseudonym, so if anyone has recommendations among those books, please tell me.
