If you could change one thing in history, what would it be and why?
Samo napusti da smo upoznali opet. My father has always said those same words whenever anyone goes on a long trip. He said them to me when I was leaving for America. I repeated them, years later, to Carter as he was leaving for Africa for the final time. We only part to meet again.
I wouldn't change anything in history; it's generally not a good idea. There are things, of course, that I wish hadn't happened, that have caused great sorrow and pain...But who am I to dictate what has already happened? Who am I to say the world would be a better place, if only...
No, the one thing I would change would be just those six words that I said on November 18, 1991. Samo napusti da smo upoznali opet. Danijela and the kids didn't want me going out for supplies, they all begged me not to, and I said it casually as I was leaving our flat. We only part to meet again, sarcastic and irritated, as if to say, I'm not going on a long trip, I'll be back soon, I'll see you in a few minutes, stop complaining. If only I'd known how ironically untrue those words actually would be. I was back in a few minutes, but by then it was too late. My little boy was gone, and I hadn't had a chance to say anything else to him.
If I were to change anything, my last words to my son would be volim te. I love you.
