before I send an email to my neighbors.
So, we are responsible (for a fee) for shoveling the sidewalk surrounding our house and the parking lot/driveway. Fine.
There was a blizzard that dumped 3 feet of snow on us. Fine.
We shoveled a little bit here and there and yesterday I even shoveled out the end of the driveway (in prep for doing more today).
Last night, as we went out to walk the dogs, we found a note on our door asking us if we were planning on shoveling out the rest of the driveway because they (upstairs neighbors) needed to use their car. Keep in mind, there is a state of emergency and parking ban in Boston and surrounding cities. Keep in mind that by 10am Sunday morning, they'd already canceled school for both Monday and Tuesday. Keep in mind that although the streets have been plowed, there is snow everywhere and they haven't sanded yet so it's treacherous going even on foot and people are walking in the middle of the street because most sidewalks are still not accessable.
I rolled my eyes and went up to talk to them and this is the conversation that ensued. (DL=Dumb Lady)
Me: I just wanted to let you know that we will be able to shovel so that you can get your car out, but do you think it's really safe to drive? Where are you going?
DL: Well, we've run out of milk so I was going to go to the store.
Me. (I think to myself, um, they've been predicting this storm since Monday - did you not think to pick up milk earlier?) Well, the roads really aren't safe, people are walking in the middle of the road and almost nobody is driving. 7-11 is open, maybe you should walk and get milk? (It's a 10 minute walk.)
DL: But it's really cold out!
WTF?!
Then this morning...
Me: You're taking her (their older daughter) to day care? It's open?
DL: Well, they didn't call to tell us that they're closed.
Me: They probably are, the schools are closed.
DL: Oh, well, if they're closed, I'll just come back home.
Me: The roads are really bad, the governor's asked everyone to stay home if they can.
DL: I only have 3 weeks of vacation and I don't want to waste it on this!
Me: I don't think it's worth risking your life. (and your child's life, sheesh!!)
10 minutes later she was back - the day care was closed. DUH!!!
Okay, so I'm going to write an email that we will not be shoveling out the driveway when there is a snow emergency. I'll be fucked if I'm going to be responsible for people driving in this crap and smashing their cars up.
