Round Two Reviews: Special Edition: Classic Who Drabbles

Feb 22, 2009 19:26

It's been a busy, exciting day for us here at cot_reviews. On any number of levels, really! But one of the most exciting is this: inspired by our Special Edition of Drabble Reviews, one of our own decided to branch out a little - and reviewed all of the Drabbles in the Classic Who categories at the CoT Awards.

Now, we're not opposed to reviewing the fics in the other areas. It's just that there are a lot of them, and we're only nine people at present. Wendy writes Nine and Ten, but she's familiar with One through Eight, so that leaves her one of the few among us who can write about them with some degree of familiarity.

Since we'd very much like to spread our wings a little bit for Round Three - I hope you'll all excuse us for the following reviews from Classic Who. We know most of you who have friended this comm are New Who fans, but we hope you won't mind us delving into a different area for a day.

These fics were also nominated because they're someone's favorite. And we are here to tell you why.

Repotted by Ellisbelle Link goes to Teaspoon
Details: G, Sarah Jane Smith, post-Fourth Doctor
Superfast: After leaving the Doctor, even though it was her own choice, Sarah (like the flower the Doctor gave her) finds it hard to adjust - but isn’t a clean break supposed to be best? Angst and - as we’d expect of Sarah Jane - the expectation of recovery.
Best Line: Later, it could be any other flower dumped into her bin.

My Hands are a TARDIS by plaidphoenix
Details: G, Five, Tegan, Nyssa
Superfast: Nyssa, on an acid trip. Seriously! Look at all the pretty colours, man...
Best Line: “My hands are a TARDIS?” asked Nyssa. “My hands are a TARDIS! I can go anywhere I want to. Ohhhh, I’ve always wanted to visit Mesopotamia.”

The Farmer’s Wife by Primsong Link goes to Teaspoon
Details: G, Susan, after leaving/being left by the First Doctor
Superfast: After a life of discovery and travelling the stars with her grandfather, Susan experiences the reality of life with a human who ages faster than her. Poignant and lump-in-the-throat time.
Best Line: The bucket sloshed heavy in her hands; above her the dark sky white-spattered with an eternity of unreachable stars.

Limits by infiniteviking Link goes to Teaspoon
Details: G, Eighth Doctor, in a quiet moment
Superfast: After the enemy is defeated, what is there left to do? An introspective Eighth Doctor enjoying the peace and quiet in between battles, so long as it’s only a pause. Peaceful glimpse into this most cultured of Doctors.
Best Line: Tea, music, a book: and beyond that, the universe.

Killing Time by kindkit
Details: PG, Fitz and Father Kreiner (from the Eighth Doctor Adventures novel series; spoilers for The Ancestor Cell familiarity with which is necessary to understand the drabble).
Superfast: Fitz, left behind by the Doctor during one of the Great Time Wars, waits with the paradoxical original of himself, convinced that the Doctor will come back for him. Timey-wimey and shivery in the best way, even if you’re not completely sure what’s going on.
Best Line: Fitz and Kreiner, copy and corpse. The Doctor made them both.

Microscopic by purple_bug
Details: G, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard (audio companion)
Superfast: Charley is on her strangest journey of discovery yet. Charley’s awe is lovely; the author doesn’t forget that she’s actually from 1930.
Best Line: Next to her in the simulation, wearing a childlike smile, the Doctor watches two vines separating and switching partners.

Leash Law by RTF Link goes to Teaspoon
Details: G, Fourth Doctor, K-9
Superfast: K9 gets an unwanted upgrade... they’re on a planet where leads are compulsory. Humorous, so very in-character for both Four and K-9.
Best Line: 'Error, Master. Such a component is not required, and will in fact be detrimental to the proper functioning of this unit.'
