i. girls like boys.
All was right in the world of NewS--or so everyone thought.
Everyone except Ryo.
At first, he could hardly believe that it had escaped Koyama's unfailing radar of Disturbance in Member Ai that something didn't seem to be right with Tegoshi and Massu--but then again, Ryo thought proudly, he must be awesome like that. The Sexy Osaka Man-slash-Secret Agent Man misses NOTHING. And The Sexy Osaka Man-slash-Secret Agent Man observed that Tegoshi seemed to be whoring himself just a tad too much lately (coached by yours truly), and that Massu's ever-present smile was starting to look stiff these past few days.
So one day, when Massu sat next to him in the dressing room, offering him a nikuman--which Ryo took, he was never one to say no to food, although he'd also observed that Massu always gave him food whenever the chubby-faced member approached him (the fact of the matter being, Massu knew that food was the one sure thing you can use to placate anyone, no matter what mood they're in, and Ryo was almost always in a mood)--Ryo took the nikuman from Massu and asked him point-blank, "Are you having some sort of lover's quarrel with Tego-nyan?"
Massu's eyes went as wide as they could go--which weren't much, but they were wider than Koyama's, anyway. He managed to swallow the huge bite of nikuman he'd just taken himself before saying, "How did you kno-- I mean...why would you think that?" he revised quickly, hoping Ryo hadn't caught the slip.
Ryo did. "What did you guys fight about?" he wanted to know, tearing a piece of the meat bun before popping it into his mouth.
"Anou... we really didn't fight about anything..."
"Well, what happened, then?" Ryo asked a bit impatiently.
Massu forced out a laugh. "I'd rather not say, really..."
"But I want to know."
"It's alright, really, thank you for your concern, Nishikido kun--"
"MASUDA!"
Massu cringed, covering his ears with his hands--or at least, the other ear was covered with the nikuman he was still eating. The rest of NewS, who were on the other end of the room (not that it was a very big room)--Tegoshi sitting on Yamapi's lap--turned to look at Ryo and Massu. Ryo glared back at all of them, the look in his face clearly telling the rest to BACK OFF, Massu and I are discussing srs business.
Everyone looked away and pretended that Ryo and Massu didn't exist.
Satisfied, Ryo turned to Massu, who sank further down on the couch. "So. TELL ME."
"But--everyone's right there!"
"What, you don't know how to whisper?"
Sighing resignedly, Massu scooted closer, cupping a hand at the side of his mouth as he leaned in to whisper in Ryo's ear (not before Ryo told him to "not breathe on me too much") and told the slightly shorter man about how the week before, after rehearsals, Tegoshi had asked Massu what Massu thought of him, and he'd answered--
"...he's a very good friend. My best friend," Massu narrated. "Then he kind of became quiet all of a sudden. I asked him if something was wrong, and he said no... I asked if he was okay, and he said yes." Massu sounded clearly confused, and Ryo felt almost sorry for him. Almost. "After that, he was kind of ignoring me, but not really. He said he wasn't mad or anything."
Ryo gave Massu a patronizing stare. "...You don't know anything, do you?"
"EH?"
"Never mind. You need to be taught several things to get by in life." Ryo nodded sagely, holding up one finger. "The first thing you should know is...repeat after me, okay?"
"Hai..."
"Good. Now repeat after me: Tegoshi is a girl."
"Tegoshi is--" Massu stopped, blinking. "But Tegoshi is a boy."
"Tegoshi is a girl."
"But--"
"I SAID REPEAT AFTER ME!"
Whimpering, Massu echoed, "Te--Tegoshi is a g-g-g-- ("SPIT IT OUT!" Ryo yelled)--girl..."
"Right. And when girls say nothing is wrong, it means something is."
"Um...okay...?"
"And when girls say that they're okay, it means they're not. When they say they're not mad, it means they are."
"Anou... are they really that contrary..?" Massu asked skeptically.
"YES. Without fail. So, furthermore, when girls ask you what you think of them, it means they like you and they want you to say that you like them, too."
A long silence followed after this statement.
From across the room, Koyama called out, "Ne~ it looks like Ryo chan and Massu are best friends now, talking so closely like that!" Ryo raised his head to scowl at Koyama, and caught the look of slight hurt on Tegoshi's face. Scowling more deeply, he turned back to Massu, who seemed frozen in place. "Do you get it now?" Ryo hissed.
"You mean..." Massu sucked in a breath, "Tegoshi likes me?"
ii. boys date girls.
Ryo and Massu's discussion ended with Ryo beaning Massu on the head with his nikuman and calling him an idiot before stalking off, so Massu is left feeling more confused than he already was before talking to Ryo.
Does Tegoshi really like him...?
Massu thought that Ryo might be pulling his leg by leading him into thinking that the other half of Tegomass likes him.
Might like him.
And now Massu couldn't help but hope.
Because if Tegoshi liked him...well...he...
Pouting, he rolled over on his stomach, clutching a Mumble plushie to his stomach as he stretched out on his bed, thinking.
Tegoshi is a girl...and girls would be jealous of other girls... right?
The next day, in the Jimusho, Massu thought he could hear two voices--one with a distinct Kansai accent, the other a low, haughty, but clearly feminine one--quarreling in full volume as he neared NewS' dressing room.
"I told you, I didn't receive any mail!" Ryo was shouting from behind the door.
"And I told you," came Sawajiri Erika's voice, not really yelling but each word biting, "that I did mail you. You know what? Never mind. I'll just leave, since you so obviously don't want me here--"
Massu pushed the door open, taking in the sight of the rest of his bandmates cowering in one corner of the room, before taking a deep breath and stepping up to Ryo and Erika, beaming brightly. "Erika san, hi~!"
Erika turned around sharply, the expression on her face going from murderous, to blank, to happy--all in a span of two seconds (which made Massu inwardly shudder, he'd seen Ryo do the same before). "Masuda kun! It's so good to see you!" she said warmly.
"It's good to see you, too..." Forcing himself not to look at anyone else in the room but Erika, Massu smiled even more widely that his cheeks seem to hurt. "Erika san, would you like to have lunch with me?"
A series of "EHHHH!?" "NANI YO?!" and "NANYARO?!?" issued forth from the other occupants of the room.
"I would love to," Erika answered smoothly, stepping forward and hooking an arm around Massu's. "Shall we go?"
"You are NOT going anywhere," Ryo snarled, grabbing her other arm. Erika shot him a look of contempt that would make a lesser human being shrivel up and die.
"I WILL go anywhere I please, Nishikido, and with WHOMEVER I please," she bit out, tugging her arm from Ryo's grip.
"MASUDA." Ryo gave Massu a scathing glare that made him want to shrivel up and die. "Not with my girlfriend."
There is silence, except the sharp click of Erika's stiletto heels as she turned to face Ryo. "I am. Not. Your. Girlfriend. Nishikido."
A tumbleweed rolls by.
Turning to Massu again, Erika smiled at him and said again, "Shall we go? Masuda kun?"
"Hai," Massu answered weakly, letting himself be led out of the room by the smaller female. His eyes met Tegoshi's just before the door closed, and the look of confused hurt on the younger man's face was almost enough to make him stay--except Erika's grip on his arm was surprisingly strong.
At the restaurant, Erika let out a stream of profanities, followed by all the things she hates about Nishikido-- "self-righteous, so full of himself, the pompous jackass that he is, UGHHHH--" --tossing and mixing the contents of her salad almost violently. Massu listened patiently, nodding once in a while and poking at his gyoza, his appetite nowhere to be found.
When Erika finally calmed down--somewhat, though the way she stabbed at her salad seemed like she was imagining stabbing at Ryo's innards--she stared at Massu calculatingly and asked him what was wrong.
"Nothing, really..."
Now the look she gave him plainly told him that she didn't believe him. "It was nice of you to ask me out to lunch, Masuda kun, but maybe you should have asked Tegoshi kun instead, ne?"
"H-How did you--?"
"R--Nishikido kind of mentioned something..." Erika answered vaguely, waving a manicured hand around.
"Sou ka..." Massu watched her stab at her salad again with her eyes narrowed. "...Do you and Nishikido kun tell each other everything?"
Erika stared at him, forkful of salad pausing in midair. "I..." She seemed genuinely at a loss for words. "I suppose...we do... in a manner of speaking..." she answered slowly.
"Anou..." Massu hesitated for a moment before asking, "Did you mean what you said earlier, that you're not Nishikido kun's girlfriend...?"
"Of course I meant it," Erika scoffed. "We're not even friends."
Blinking confusedly, Massu asked cautiously, "Then...what are you to Nishikido kun?"
"I don't know." Erika let out an almost weary sigh. Massu raised his glass of iced tea to his lips as Erika said, "His sugar mommy, maybe."
She waited for several moments as he spluttered and flailed, iced tea flying everywhere, before calmly handing him the entire tissue holder. "Masuda kun, really. I'm only kidding." She paused. "I think."
"B-But...you--he--" Massu gulped down half of his iced tea before managing to properly ask, "Do you love him?"
Erika looked away. "Maybe."
"Has he...told you that he loves you? Erm...likes you?"
"No, he hasn't," Erika answered almost triumphantly, as if to say, if he hasn't said anything then why should I?
Massu went back to poking at his gyoza broodingly again. "Relationships are complicated, ne..."
Erika only laughed lightly. They focused their attention on their food for several moments, Massu taking hearty mouthfuls of beef and rice, when Erika said quietly, "If I were you, though...don't be like us.
"If you like Tegoshi kun...you should tell him how you feel."
iii. boys like girls.
As their meal was ending, Ryo arrived at their table, scowling and scary-looking, though he rather politely asked if he could sit down. He did, and Massu stood up to leave--but not before telling Erika, "I think you should tell him, too." Massu flashed the non-couple a smile before leaving the restaurant.
Back at the Jimusho, Massu found Tegoshi alone in their room. Tegoshi gave him a tentative smile, which he returned happily--it was the first real smile Tegoshi had given him since--well, since Tegoshi started acting like such a girl.
He grinned inwardly at the thought. Ryo may have been onto something, after all.
Tegoshi stared at him as he plopped down on the couch, scooting close until their knees and thighs were touching. Massu stared back for several moments before grinning. "Hi."
"Maaaaaaaaaaaaassu~" And Tegoshi launched himself into his arms, sniffing. "I'm sorry..."
"Daijoubu," Massu said softly, holding him close. "I'm sorry, too. Okay?"
"Okay..."
"And...anou... I don't like Erika san or anything, okay?"
Tegoshi giggled. "I know." He pulled away slightly, beaming at Massu. "I missed you."
"I know." They stared at each other again, and Massu realized just how close their faces were. Tegoshi blinked at him, and--
The door to the dressing room banged open. "So I ducked behind some bushes, because if she sees me, I'm dead," Jin was saying to Yamapi as they entered.
Massu stood up from the couch, pulling Tegoshi with him. "Come on, let's go have lunch."
"But you just--" Tegoshi trailed off, shaking his head and smiling fondly--after all, he knew very well just how much Massu could eat in one day. "Okay," he agreed happily. "Let's go."
Massu didn't let go of Tegoshi's hand as they made their way to the door. Tegoshi waved cheerfully at Jin and Yamapi with their held hands as they went out.
"Massu..." Tegoshi began, biting his lip as they walked toward the elevators, "I think I have something to tell you."
"I know." Massu is smiling at him gently. "I have something to tell you, too."
