Supernatural: "Lucifer Rising"

All right, enough stalling. It really shouldn't take me so long to think about these things...

Always good to hear Kansas. If this show had a theme song, "Carry on Wayward Son" would be it.

Ooh, slaughtering nuns with chainsaws! That's pretty bad-ass.

The yellow eyes are even yellower. They look almost 3D, or maybe something is reflected in them.

I loved Bobby telling Dean that he's a better man than his father, because he is, and he needs to hear that. Dean just has such a humanity to him - almost nobleness - and that's part of why I love him so much. If I were better at expressing these things, I would do a meta about it.

I also love how Bobby is sort of the voice of reason, telling the boys things they might not want to hear but need to consider. Apparently, there were rumours Bobby might not make it to the end of the season, so thank goodness that never happened. I can't imagine the show without him. But it is kind of amazing how he's lasted this long.

Castiel finally gets a backbone! I guess he'll be on the run next season. But where can you hide from omniscient beings who know where you are at all times? Maybe that's what happened to Anna-she's going to escape from wherever those goons took her and show him how to go rogue. That could be fun to watch.

Oh, I so called it! It's Sam! Sam is the first demon! But why does Lilith look surprised to see him? She knew she wasn't going to survive, and she was training Ruby to have him kill her, so yeah, I don't get that.

Last episode, some people had predicted Ruby would be working with Lilith, and I don't know if that was a just a guess or if they were spoiled, but it is sort of the only thing that makes sense. There's no other way she could've got out of hell. I'm glad I never trusted her. I always knew she had some kind of agenda, I just didn't know what. I think there was a part of her that did genuinely care for Sam, though, if a demon is capable of feeling like that. Also, as clever as Ruby likes to think she was, having possession of a demon killing knife wasn't too smart, because she had to figure that at some point, it would be used on her. So I love the way the brothers gutted her like a fish. Hello, poetic justice! (How did Castiel get her knife, anyway?)

And even though now we know she was working with Lilith the whole time, I'm still not clear on Ruby's plans. What did she expect to gain from starting the apocalypse? Was Lilith going to reward her somehow? Were she and Sam going to rule the underworld together? We never got to find out. There must have been some purpose to her other than as a wedge to drive the brothers apart. I mean, what was all that stuff about in Jus in Bello where she suggested sacrificing the girl? Was she just testing Sam? Did she know he wouldn't do it? And then why couldn't Lilith kill Sam last year? If she had, would the apocalypse have happened then, or did Dean still have to go to hell first to break the first seal? I still have so many questions. I guess it's best not to think too much about it.

I don't know how to explain it, really, but although I liked the character and her arc, there was something about the execution that didn't quite do it for me. I think Ruby could've been a more powerful figure in someone else's hands. I wish Katie Cassidy could've done this reveal. She would've rocked it. On the bright side: Yay, goodbye, Ruby!

I love that the boys were both pawns, and that the good side was no better than the bad side. I was nervous when the show started further exploring the religious angle this season, but they handled it really well. In fact, I think the theme of the entire series might be whether or not you can actually fight destiny, or if you can forge your own path. Or would you choose the path laid out for you without even realizing it? It's a fascinating idea.

"I'm sorry" has never mean so much. Man, Dean owes Sam the biggest "I told you so" ever.

Overall, I liked the episode, but it didn't blow me away. The first half kind of dragged, there was a little too much talk in some places and not enough in others, and not enough action. I like that the ending had the boys come back full circle, and I'm intrigued to see where they go with that next season. But it didn't have me freaking out like last year, so I can live with it.

Favourite line: "You stupid stupid son of a bitch! Well, boo-hoo! I am so sorry your feelings are hurt, princess! Are you under the impression that family's supposed to make you feel good? Make you an apple pie, maybe? They're supposed to make you miserable! That's why they're family." Yep, I'm pretty sure truer words were never spoken.
