The oversaturation of Nelly Furtado, or: shut up, haters.

Woo, I've been productive this weekend! I spent most of yesterday trying to find a layout I liked, and finally came across this one. Isn't it pretty? Also changed my mood theme to one that matches it better. Using the Admin Console for that is sooo much easier than the mood theme editor that I used the first time - that took forever, having to paste in the address of every picture. I'm kinda bored. I can't go anywhere because nothing's open today. I never thought I'd say this, but maybe long weekends are too long sometimes.
Anyway.
I guess I should've talked about this days ago, but the Junos were last Sunday, and Nelly Furtado predictably swept them. Those comedy bits she did were...weird. Was that old woman supposed to be her? I thought it was some guest comedian. The music video parody was kind of funny, though. Not sure what she was thinking with the hockey outfit, and it also took me a moment to realize what she was doing in a bird costume. The last dress she wore, that purple one, was the only one I thought suited her.

I felt kind of bad for K-OS. His record is really good and he was nominated so much, I thought he would've got at least one. He's kind of becoming the Susan Lucci of the Junos-always a nominee, never a winner. I'm not sure it warranted the stunt he pulled, though, that seemed kind of juvenile. I wish the show was more about talent than record sales, too, but I guess that's the case with most big awards ceremonies - the most deserving people rarely win. Like, I don't know why the Best New Artist category had two Canadian Idol people in it. It's not like people really take them seriously; in six months, no one will even remember who they are. So it seems kind of pointless to put them in the show. Is there a category for "Most promising Washed -up Reality TV singer"? Not sure what Rick Hansen was doing there either. I know he's a national hero and all, but he's not a musician.

If you made sense of any of the above rambling and are still here...congrats. What I'd really like to talk about is Nelly Furtado. She's been in the news a lot the last couple weeks, and ground zero has been here in Victoria. It all started when the city decided to give her a day in her honour. There was a ceremony at city hall, where Nelly made a speech and then some dancers from her old school performed a dance to a medley of her songs...except the music started skipping part way through. It was awful to watch, I felt so bad for them. But they continued, dancing in silence, and then Nelly jumped up on stage and sang for them, which was awesome. I mean, she didn't have to and it was cool that she helped out.
But then, after the concert that night, the letters started coming in to the paper. One guy complained they featured Nelly too much when there were other things they could be talking about. True, I suppose, but the fact that this person took the time to write in and complain is just kind of pathetic. Didn't he have anything else to do than waste energy on someone he supposedly loathes? It just seems counterintuitive. Some other people complained that they were assaulted when trying to dance at the concert because it annoyed the people behind them, which is even stupider. I'm sorry, but you can't go to a concert and expect people not to dance. The performer doesn't want to see people just standing around either. You might as well stay home and listen to the record if you're going to be like that. Yet another person said that her fans (judging by the audience at city hall) were all little girls. Which is just plain false, because I was there, and most of the people I saw were around my age (20s) or older. There may have been a few families with young girls, but they weren't the majority. And come on, it was spring break-where else were they gonna go?Other people have questioned her fashion sense, or lack thereof, and how she seems to have two split personalities-the sexy siren and the wholesome hometown girl.
Well, my point in all this is that regardless of her image, I think the Nelly we saw at city hall is the real Nelly. She wasn't putting on an act. She seemed genuinely pleased and surprised by all the love. Look, I have mixed feelings about her new image too, but that doesn't mean I don't still like her and respect her as a person. You can like someone without agreeing with the artistic choices they make, can't you? It looks to me like she's not all that comfortable with her sexy style anyway - she seems kind of awkward sometimes, unsure of what to do, which makes me think it was partly a marketing thing. That's probably where the "she is so fake" stuff comes from as well. I would call it well-rehearsed - of course she's going to sound fake if you've seen lots of interviews with her where she says basically the same stuff. Creativity gives out after you've explained yourself the first couple hundred times. My brother claims to know people who know her and say she's fake. Yeah, well, my bosses are neighbours with her family. I think that trumps hearsay.
So whenever I hear all this crap being talked about her, I get pretty defensive. I don't even know why. Nelly probably doesn't care. But I do. It's weird, isn't it, how you want people to like the same stuff you do, and when they don't, you feel offended? It's not rational, and I can't explain it, but that's how I feel. So, haters, and people who think she's overexposed? You guys can go to hell. I don't want to hear it.
