Memories of Yesterdays

“I know you took it, Anakin! No one else would have.”

“I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. You’re delusional as usual.”

“Anakin, I’m warning you…”

Jacen’s younger brother laughed and quickly walked through an open doorway and into the big open room where the festivities were just getting started. Jacen quickly followed him, grasping the back of his brother’s jacket and letting himself be pulled along through the crowd, wincing at the deafening combination of music and voices of dozens of different species pitched to carry over it.

Anakin finally stopped near the steps that led up to a large stage draped in white with glittering decorations hanging from the high ceiling. He turned and grabbed Jacen by the arm, leaning close to shout close to his ear.

“It’s almost time for the speeches. You know she gave strict orders for us to be here.”

Jacen nodded but still reached out a hand to grab Anakin’s jacket again. No way was his little brother slipping off again.

As they waited Anakin casually reached up to pat the front pocket of his jacket. His mouth wore an enigmatic smile and his blue eyes glowed with mischief. Jacen sucked in his breath sharply and reached for the pocket’s contents. Anakin batted his hand away and then elbowed him in the side.

“Anakin…”

He started to reach for his brother with both hands but something caused him to look up at the stage. His parents had just walked out, Leia looking every inch the princess and Han spiffed up to a high shine. But instead of looking out at the audience, Leia was frowning down at her sons.

Anakin was a little quicker at pasting a big smile on his face while Jacen was frozen in mid-attack. He quickly slung an arm around his brother and tried to look as casual and innocent as possible. Leia’s steps faltered for just a moment but then she had reached the podium and turned a sudden smile of her own on for the crowd.

Jacen leaned close to Anakin.

“Give it to me or I’ll tie you up in knots.”

Anakin stomped on Jacen’s foot with his boot heel, eliciting a shrill yelp from his older brother, which was unfortunately during the time when the crowd had dropped its noise to a murmur. Leia’s smile never faltered but Han sauntered closer, a warning frown on his face as he squinted down at his sons.

Anakin tried to shrug Jacen’s arm off but his older brother held on tight.

“Just give me the note, Anakin, I know you have it in your pocket.”

Anakin turned his head and hissed at Jacen.

“Can’t you wait a minute? Dad’s watching.”

“I don’t care.”

Anakin reached up and snatched a thin piece of flimsy out of his pocket and shoved it into Jacen’s hand. Then he turned and pushed his way through the crowd to find the exit.

Jacen watched his retreating brother and then looked down at the flimsy. He growled in frustration and then hurried after his brother. On stage, Han through up his hands and rolled his eyes. Leia ended her short speech and the crowd broke into applause.

Jacen caught up with Anakin in the hallway, grabbed his arm and spun him around.

“What’s the matter with you, Anakin? Girls are writing you notes all the time, giving you things, calling you. What’s wrong with someone liking me for a change?”

Anakin stood silently, looking at Jacen with a frown on his face and a strange look in his eyes. When he finally spoke, it was in a whisper and Jacen had to lean closer to hear.

“She’s not…right…for you, Jacen. I don’t like you being around her.”

Slowly he backed away from Jacen, then turned and ran through the doorway leading outside. Jacen stood there, stunned. He looked down at the flimsy still held tightly in his hand. He smoothed it out and read it once again before crumpling it in his fist.

“He’s coming around again…”

“Lord Caedus? Lord Caedus, can you hear me?”

“Anakin…”

“His signs still aren’t good…”

“Anakin…I didn’t like her…not really…not better than you…”

“Lord Caedus…”

Slowly Caedus’ eyes opened, faces swam before him, some familiar, some not.

“Lord Caedus, you’ve been injured. You’re in a critical situation.”

“Anakin…”

Slowly the faces faded away until there was nothing left but darkness.
