Since your primary interest is the patterns, I think it would be well worthwhile. I own the book, and consider it one of the most valuable in my collection, precisely because of the variety of patterns. His construction tips (there actually are not very many) are all absolutely useless unless you are interested in making stage-quality garments.

I agree with Sidneyeileen. I was looking for pattern drafting information and tools and Waisted Efforts is just full with them. I love it.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like its just what I am after. I have loved working with the patterns from Corsets, C+C etc, and more recently Foundations Revealed, but I do think its time to start making more of my own. I just bit the bullet and bought a copy :D

He shows how to drape the patterns from C&C, but in the back are a lot of patterns from Symington. Some are dated, and they are in the range you are looking for.
I just wish the photos were in color!

yeah, I read that its not very flash looking. Symington would be great for me as I live down the road from there and am visiting for a day in a couple of weeks to view some 1876-1882 corsets. Hopefully there will be one or two from the book out for me to drool over! ;)

lol Laura and I just went for exactly the same reason, Cali's going to wonder what all the interest is in 1876-1882! You're going to have a great time! But wrap up warm if he puts you in the Costume Store...

haha is it that obvious why I'm going? ;) Out of interest, will I be able to take patterns from the corsets? I have been put on a "study day" from 10am to 1pm or thereabouts.

I would highly recommend Robert Doule's book. I have actually met the gentleman as he taught the very last year of the Costume Cutting and Construction program at our college. Unfortunately, I had already taken the 2 year course and couldn't attend his classes, but let me tell you that the quality of the costumes for productions on stage were superb. At the end of each year, the second year class would decide on a theme and create a complete outfit for the year end fashion show. But as it was the last year, the first year class were also able to participate. (1st year...stitchers...taught you to sew; the 2nd year...cutters...taught you to draft.) I think that was the best showcase of all the 8 years I attended ( ... )
