I would highly recommend Robert Doule's book. I have actually met the gentleman as he taught the very last year of the Costume Cutting and Construction program at our college. Unfortunately, I had already taken the 2 year course and couldn't attend his classes, but let me tell you that the quality of the costumes for productions on stage were superb. At the end of each year, the second year class would decide on a theme and create a complete outfit for the year end fashion show. But as it was the last year, the first year class were also able to participate. (1st year...stitchers...taught you to sew; the 2nd year...cutters...taught you to draft.) I think that was the best showcase of all the 8 years I attended.
I purchased his book "The Art of the Tailor" and should have puechased "Waised Efforts" as well, but didn't. Isn't hindsight great? Both were signed by him.
He definetely knows his stuff and really the books aren't all that expensive if you look at what you are actually getting.
We also had a designer who designed for the opera divas in England as well as constructed costumes for the Japanese operas. He taught us Theatre History and we became great friends. If I knew then what I know now, I would have spent more time with both gentlemen and asked a heck of a lot more questions than I did. My loss completely.
