[1] The Dream (With Mal and Cori)

Sep 08, 2010 20:38

In his dream, he was standing alone on a beach, staring out at the ocean.

Inexplicably, there was an elevator several hundred feet away. But then, this was a dream.

There was no one in sight, though he knew that she was close by. Walking with the children on the beach. That's what he remembered. That's how it was supposed to go. They would be ( Read more... )

It was a drastically different scene from what he had encountered in Arthur's dream.

He didn't want to tamper with anything this time. Not until he knew just what sort of dream he was dealing with; was this still his own realm, or was this actually the dreamer's territory? Any surprises like the last time weren't very high up on his want list, but as far as he knew if he just kept to himself he wouldn't trigger whatever subconscious defense system this one may have had in place. Though he couldn't much that could be used as such along the empty dreamscape....

He wrapped his jacket a little tighter against the wind, feeling the man before he actually saw him.

And he kept walking toward him. Well, he supposed there was only one way to find out if his suspicions were right.

There was something... different.

He couldn't quite place it, not at first, but out of the corner of his eye he could see someone walking toward him and it wasn't who it should have been. Putting his hands in his pockets, he wrapped his hand around the totem that lay there before turning his head to get a better look.

At first the dream started out with the memory of Mal. The usual things she did on this beach. Walking along with her beloved children, playing in the sand with them, everything she had done with them in the memory.

But every now and then she would look around. Confused. In a daze. Wondering where she was, who these children really were... and then the memory would snap back into place. At least, for the moment. So long as Cori left it undisturbed.

But of course he didn't. Already she could feel the foreigner approaching her Dom. And that snapped the projection fully out of the memory. She walked away from the children now, letting them play in the sand alone. They didn't notice. Not the way she did at least. And it didn't matter. They weren't real.

But Dom was. And she watched him carefully, standing near a large mass of rocks, watching the stranger approaching. Waiting now.

The Corinthian could feel the new presense as well, this one possibly even stronger, and he couldn't help tensing. What had Arthur called them, projections? Those over protective dreams.

But nothing happened. So maybe this was working out after all. Though he still had the urge to force the projection away now before it got it in its mind to deal with his intruding, that would count as tampering, and that would still hurt this more than it would help.

Dammit.

He just had to stay focused on the dreamer for now. And when it looked like the man finally noticed him he even gave a little wave. "It was Cobb, wasn't it?"

He stared at the man. He could tell Mal was close, but he wanted to keep her away, for now anyway, while he tried to figure out just who this was and how he was in his dream.

"Who the hell are you, and what are you doing here?"

"You mean you forgot our conversation already?" he asked, brow raised. He finally stopped some ways from Cobb, eyed the man critically. So this one was just like the brat after all. Thankfully he managed to hide his frown, tilted his head almost curiously instead. "That kind of hurts, honestly. I thought I made better impressions than that."

Cobb forced himself out of his thoughts and shook his head. Managing to bring himself out of his thoughts of Mal, he quickly remembered his conversations with both Arthur and... this man.

He frowned slightly, but looked at the man critically in return.

"Corinthian. I remember. I was... preoccupied."

Surprisingly, he allowed himself some amusement. "That does make me feel a little better."

He could leave now. Cobb was lucid, so he had found at least half the answer he was looking for, and so far without any nasty consequences outside of the future interrogation he knew he was facing.

But he still needed to know how far his talent stretched. That was the problem. "Where are you right now?"

Cobb's eyes narrowed. "That's none of your business."

What did this man want? And what was he doing here? Despite himself, Cobb found himself curious. He wanted to figure out just who this "Corinthian" was, but the invasion into his dream-memories was upsetting to say the least, and he was worried about how Mal would react.

The wind was picking up. Cobb looked up at the sky involuntarily. The storm was getting closer.

"Not very talkitive, are you? Maybe that friend of yours could learn a thing or two from you about shutting up."

He shivered against the wind, unseen inside his jacket. Maybe it was time to step out. At least for now. He hated storms, sticking around for one didn't sound very appealing. He could always come back.

But for some reason he started to walk toward the man again instead. "I'm only here because I was curious."

Something about the Corinthian made Dom want to step back and away from him. But he resisted the urge and stood his ground, almost wanting to laugh at the man's accusation that he wasn't talkative.

He had a choice. He could either get rid of him, or try to learn more about him. He had to admit to himself that he really did want to know more, but the threat of Mal's appearance, though it had so far been unwarranted, would grow stronger with every moment the Corinthian lingered.

But Cobb was never really one to play it safe.

"Alright, fair enough. I'll admit I'm curious, myself. So for now I'll pretend to ignore the fact that you invaded the privacy of my dreams in the interest of mutual disclosure."

"Privacy". The Corinthian snorted to himself. Ha! As much as he wanted to point out that no world had such a things as true privacy, he kept his thoughts to himself, walked over to Dom with a small nod. "Maybe we can both figure some things out, then. But first."

He jerked a thumb over his shoulder, in the general direction he could feel the projection lingering. He was only a little wary from the last time, after all. "That can't be here. And if you're as bad as Arthur at getting rid of them, I'll be more than happy to do it."

Maybe the other projections were better at ignoring intrusions. But Mal was a presence Dom could never escape. His own guilt and self-loathing were things he could never escape. And they took the form in the woman he adored, who wanted nothing more than to bring him back to her. And if that meant disposing of these pesky little intruders that snuck into her Dom's dreams, well then what did she care?

As the Corinthian drew even more attention to her, Mal began to approach the pair. She seemed pretty safe, at least no visible weapons. But with Mal you could never be sure. And her face, that twisted little smile of hers was hardly comforting.

"I am thinking that it is you who should really not be in here," She shot back now.

Dom shook his head. "First of all, it's 'she,' not 'that,' and secondly, I..." he hesitated for the briefest moment, "...can't get rid of her. And... it'd just be better if we continued our conversation... elsewhere."

After a moment, he added, "please."

He was glancing at the shade of his wife with some wariness.

He followed the other man's glance, frowning as he watched the woman approach. Dammit, this had been what he was trying to avoid.

"Then lead the way and make it quick," he muttered to Dom, not taking his shaded eyes off the projection.

Mal's eyes narrowed sharply on the Corinthian at that. Then her smile was back as she turned to Dom again. "Dom, my love. I think this conversation is just fine right here." And if not she'd just show up wherever they went.
