Writerly Ways

It would help if I stopped forgetting to come back and update snippets and word count. Someone might be interested.

I was thinking back to that conversation about adapting fanfic and it occurred to me what could be interesting would be to take the idea of a kid calling the cops on h is killer father and they don't believe him, lecture him on abusing 911 and leaving (because killing Gil gives us the emotional punch of 'he saved me' but let's be honest killing a cop would have been the stupidest thing Martin could have done) and the kid lives with the punishment the dad gives him for it (I've watched enough Evil Lives Here to see how that goes).

Fast forward a decade, the boy is twenty and doing drugs because I remembered Dani was in narcotics first. They meet then, fast forward another decade and she's in homicide and there are dueling serial killers in town (a true crime thing I'm recording as I do this post). It's a thought at any rate.

Snippet: They hiked back toward the Chi house. Something rustled in the woods alerting them.

“It’s just me. Don’t attack,” Dan called from the brush before popping out.

“Really? You didn’t need to follow us,” Laura sniffed.

“You can always use more fighters.” Dan shrugged. “And the Näcken wasn’t even interested in any of you. He was going home. I could have been here.”

“We had plenty of power without you.”

Alessia side eyed Laura as Dan’s shoulders slumped. It wasn’t easy to be the only guy on the team and he was used to being excluded. He’d confidence in her once he was never sure if it was because he was a guy or if it was because he was Filipino. There weren’t a lot of Asians on campus and even nearby Pittsburgh didn’t have a big Filipino population. He no doubt felt left out a lot. “I don’t mind having more power. You’re just lucky you announced yourself.”

He grinned at her. He had such a broad smile, like all of him poured into it. “I know better.” He fished a cross earring out of his pocket and jammed it into his right earlobe, feeling safe they wouldn’t have to fight again and wasn’t at risk at having it ripped out.
