Here's something I've spoken to several folk about before, about why Prop 8 did not get passed. It's pretty interesting, and had a lot to do with the fact that the California gay community pays little attention to the needs of the black gay community, and thus those in African American community had no incentive to vote for it. I thought it was a ( Read more... )

I don't have time to listen to it now, but the blurb suggests it's talking about the black community, not the black GAY community--which would not have been a large enough voting bloc to have any substantial effect, even if they aren't being properly recognized within the movement.

according to Nate Silver--a/ka/ pollster extraordinaire--the reason prop 8 succeeded was because of a generational gap, not a racial gap:

misread your original post. still, maybe I need to listen to it (I will, when I'm not doing this to procrastinate), but I doubt the Black community at large is in touch enough with how the gay community deals with gays of color for it to have a substantial impact. once again, the blurb seems to contradict you (this time for real) as it suggests it's about Black issues vs. gay issues, not Black gay issues vs. White gay issues.

Yeah, I kind of forgot to mention that part. I was pretty tired when I typed this, and was procrastinating. It did have a lot to do with the black community in general, and also stated that the issues that affect the black gay community are, in many ways, the same issues that affect the black community in CA in general. This clip was focusing on the fact that 2 out of 3 black voters voted for prop 8, so a generation gap was kind of irrelevant to their point.

my professor in a class just showed us a clip from Al-Jazeera English. It was a show called Inside USA, hosted by Naomi Klein's husband, Avi Lewis. It's really cool, I wasn't aware of how radical Al Jazeera is, as he's a well-known socialist and for the clip she showed us, he was just sitting down and having an extremely intelligent discussion with Angela Davis.
