Yesterday while getting a call of a civil matter in an apt. complex we get flagged own by another resident.  So we finish that and wander over to her.  She says that there is a bat flying around in her apartment and was wondering what she should do.  My new offcier I am training kind of looks over at me.  I pipe in and suggest that Animal Control be called since they can most effectively deal with it.

This was ok with her until the other officer sent over comes over and says "a bat?  I think we can handle that".  Great.

We go up. He asks her if she has a bucket.  No.

He asks if she has a pot with a lid.  That she does.

I am wondering what he plans to season the bat with when caught.  I think he was thinking of the bat perching somewhere, not actively flying around the apartment.

So we get inside and the bat is circling the living room area. After realizing his idea wasnt working he begins looking around for something to swat at him with. About the same time he finds a sword type knife in a nylon sheath this girl has.   He removes it and is swiping around like Conan the Barbarian with the thing.  My rookie is behind him and if wildly ducking when the bat comes near.

My officer safety concern kicks in thinking he is going to filet one of us with this sword.  What he plans on doing with a small sword vs. a bat I am still not sure.   As I am seeking shelter from a cutting I find a metal BBQ spatula on the counter.  I grab it and its time to go.  The bat is still flying outisde the room.  I step into the room that the other two still wont quite enter, and watch the circular flight pattern, planning my move.

Swat.  Splat.  Thunk.

Make contact on the fourth try, bat hit wall and drops.  Still not sure whether knocked out or killed we put it into a grocery bag and remove it outside the department.  Lady is quite thankful.  So am I.  All in a day's work sometimes.
