The recent news about Mel Gibson's anti-semitic comments is what prompted me to write this entry.
What Mr. Gibson said is apparently and plainly unjust and discriminatory. However, there is still free speech to consider and nowadays it seems no one can say anything that won't be spat at and yelled at. But I am not writing this about Mel Gibson or his comments.
What I really want to talk about is the actual conflict that we are experiencing not just in the Middle East but within this country. So, nothing at all can be said regarding Jews, especially if bad, as it would definitely be anti-semitic. You cannot say anything about Israel because then you are against the United States and United Nations, for that matter. However, look what is "OK" to be said:
-Palestinian militants
-Palestinian terrorists
-Iraqi terrorists
-Afghani terrorists
-Lebanese Hizbollah militia = terrorists
-Iranian extremists
-etc....
The list is very long and generally anti-Islamic. But wait? What do you mean anti-Islamic. There is no such thing as that!
But of course the Christian nations would unite behind Hebrews, who have their fair share of Christ's story. That simply makes Muslims into religious extremists imposing terror on Christian and Jewish lands. And the US media! Well it is all Israel, Israel, Israel. If 10 Isrealis died it is a huge outcry about the horrific strikes of the Hizbollah militias. Public support in the United States is overwhelmingly for Israel. That Lebanon killed 2 soldiers and sparked off the war is undeniable. However, has Israel behaved so heavenly and justly with its neighbors. There have always been conflicts between Israel and Egypt, Palestine, Syria or Lebanon. But the US media and government policy regarding the Middle East has created an opionion of always feeling sorry for and defending Israel. It was wrong to kill the 2 soldiers, but did it deserve a war? A war in which over 700 Lebanese have died and around 100 or less Israelis?
I am really frustrated with attitudes here. People here do not have a great worldly view and knowledge and are lead by dog leashes by government and media propaganda.
I am not saying we should hate Israel and be behind Lebanon!
All I am saying is that not both sides of the story are heard here. Even if they are mentioned in the media, the Islamic points of view are never emphasized, showed briefly among the complete coverage of events, and often the worst picked out among them. Again, I have Jewish friends and they are very nice and I have nothing against them or Israel. It just seems very unfair that the Muslim nations are seen as evil and terrorist because of certain sects and extremists.
When you watch the news, pay more attention. Do research on the internet and find out stories you have not read before. Make up your own opionion, not one forced onto you by FOX or NBC or president Bush. Don't always choose to easy way to do things.
Did you know that Israelis attacks on Lebanon this week killed about 50 farm workers in the fields?! Now I don't know what the farmers have done to them and I don't see how they could be mistaken for militants. But the story was not big news on TV. Yahoo had better coverage of it. But what if the same had happened the other way around. I think that the story would be overexaggerated and public propaganda would sway even more people against Lebanon.
Research. Decide. Compare.
