OK Go - Oh No

While working at Record World a few summers back I discovered the band OK Go. Cheeky keyboards. Foot stomps and hand claps. Lyrics just goofy enough to be fun but sometimes strangely introspective. Lots of energy, but diverse too. I dig em and put them up in my Employee Pick section for a few weeks. But being that it was their first album and they didn't seem to be anything THAT special so I never had any big hopes on seeing another decent album from them.

About a week ago I stumbled upon their new album, "Oh No". I never really got around to listening to it, and for a few days, even forgot about it. That all changed once I saw their new music video. I'll give you a second to watch it.

Did these guys make this shit up themselves? If so, I think I'm in love.

I quickly give the album a listen and then kick myself for not doing it earlier.

OK Go - Oh No

On their self titled album, did OK Go seem a bit immature? Perhaps. Songs like 'C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips' and 'You're So Damn Hot' might give one that impression. Even if you liked the music, it was hard to take them seriously. With "Oh No" the band quickly forces you to do so. They sound like a REAL band! Does this mean they've lost their goofy charm? Of course not. In fact, they've somehow been able to have even MORE of those lovable, chewable, 'almost so poppy it hurts but really it's just so fun that you can't help but go insane when you hear it', sensibilities that first enticed me to like them in the first place. All this, but they rock harder. Thank you!

Albums that are good all the way through are my favorite, and it's hard finding a bad song on the album. "When they finally come to destroy the earth, they'll have to go through you first..." starts out frontman Damian Kulash on 'Invincible'. 'Do What You Want' just destroys your ability to sit in one place as the rest of the guys prove that they'll sing some backup if they feel like it. (And they do.) 'Here it goes again's chorus just runs circles in your head until you're dizzy with joy. Handclaps and background ooh ooh ooh oohs return for 'A Good Idea At The Time'. I hope I don't have to tell you how awesome their single(?) 'A Million Ways' is. (Hint. I just linked it above.) One Zero Zero Zero Zero Zero Zero. YES!

It's very rare that something can be so disposable, yet, last and last. You're supposed to get sick of stuff like this really quickly right? It's amazing how much it helps when every song is so good, you never end up listening to the same ones over and over. The energy continues, peaking with the 'Oh Oooh Oh Ba Da Ba Da. Oh Oooh Hey Hey Hey Hey' chant on 'Crash The Party' then slowing down for a slower, erie groove on 'Maybe This Time'.

I'm still not good enough to use my own words to describe how awesome things can be. Here's a bit from AMG by Johnny Loftus...

But what are you going to do? OK Go has written an album that coats its incredibly accessible nuts and bolts with an effervescent rocket sauce, and that's just the way it is. It's got that unique zing, the one that says "modern rock sensation!" on the label.

Rocket Sauce?! I'm a guy that hearts his rocket sauce and "Oh No" is dripping with it.
