I am confused.
Why do some people think that being rude, derogatory and/or just an overall spazz-wank to a person who’s doing something for you will mean that it’ll happen faster, better or even for free?
Ok so I’m talking about work here (when am I not talking about work?) but if you’ve been screwed, overcharged or something as equally as cataclysmic sure, you have every right to let us know. But when people practically have a mental breakdown over it such as banging the desk, hurling abuse and even threatening staff I don’t see how they think that this will achieve anything. That was also a lot of ‘t’ words just then, My bad.
Over the past few weeks it’s just seemed to escalate to a point where every customer I see is just downright angry and firmly believe that Woolies (as well as all the people in the known universe) owe them something. For example, last night I closed and at 11:10 or so a guy came through with a trolley half-full of stuff and tried to go through express. I politely told him that there was a register on the floor that was open and to take his groceries through there. He shouted back at me that the “guy [currently being served] was taking too goddamn long and [he] shouldn’t have to wait.” O.o Seriously. I held back a chuckle and told him as it was less than an hour to close, I only have one member of staff on the floor. He only grimaced and wandered back up to the register. Had he been nicer to me, I would’ve let him through express and even possibly served him myself but honestly. What did he expect?
I had a serving (not supervising) shift the other day and had another amusing customer. Now I’d like to think that I am a rather good packer. I may be a little slower than all the other people who’ll mindlessly shove whatever into the bags but even as much as I hate my job, I do my stinking level best to do it well. I’ve had countless people look out for me, want me to pack their things as well as tell me or the manager/supervisors that I have skills. Anyway, I have this customer of whom when I ask how she is, she answers “patient”. I thought she was remarking on how busy it was (because it was monstrously busy that day, like always) but she continued with “did you know that you’re a very slow packer?” with this stupid smug look on her face. Again, with the stifling of chuckles, I explained that I like to pack peoples shopping well, especially if they have green bags (of which the previous three people had) and yes it does take a little longer than if I aimlessly shoved everything in a bag but at least you can rest easy knowing your eggs will not be broken and your rat poison is nowhere near your baby food. Again with the stupid smug, “you’re just too slow. Just look at everyone around you! Well I guess I picked the wrong register then.”
“I guess you did. You are more than welcome to take your stuff and line up elsewhere ma’am.”
That shut her up. I did not speed up at all and she left with a smile on *my* face and the damn best packed bags every in the history of packing bags. I should’ve pulled the “life-time disease and simply can’t work as fast as the others” trick xD. Ok so it may seem a little petty of me, but I‘m not a machine. You can’t talk to me like that and expect anything good. Pack them yourself.
I’ve also been there when a guy, who so obviously buying smokes for his underage friend, was denied smokes for said reason. I mean, his friend bolted out of the store as soon as we asked for ID. Nothing sus right? The guy then starts hurling abuse at Cathy (supervisor who was closing, I was the eight o’clocker), calling her an eff’ing slut and other nice things. We both looked at each other and laughed. The guy’s throwing the money at us, telling us that we have to serve him as it was out job. Cathy, just told him we don’t, especially after his little performance and refused service. Maybe I’m just way too naïve, but how can you expect anyone to do anything for you when you abuse them? I just do not comprehend!
For laughs,
remember this?. Well I had another run in with a couple of stealing drunks last night. Leah in liquor refused service because they were so drunk to the point of still drinking in the centre. I mean she had a champagne glass and the guy left his bourbon outside! Again the lady was getting all angry and telling us that because we’re refusing service she’s going to have to drive under the influence to get some (which I responded “you want us to call the police as well?” What a thing to say, seriously what is it with people?! Drunk or not, everyone’s gone mad.). The guy then starts walking out with a unpaid bottle of Wild Turkey, still with the security thing on it. Superhero Kathryn springs back into action and follows the guy. I didn’t follow him far as he had to pick up his bourbon on the way out, told him he hasn’t paid for the bottle and he simply kept walking. He was drunk enough for me to amble after him and grab the bottle out of his hand easy, plus I had the security guy with me as well. But still. What is going on guys?!
I AM STILL CONFUSED D:
