Would you believe that in the nearly 5 years we've been together, Elliott and I have never traveled any place that a) we couldn't reach by car, b) we couldn't stay at for free, and c) wasn't near one of our parents' houses? It's true. We're frugal, busy people. And while we've talked about taking trips here or there just the two of us, both of us were too hesitant to spend the money or take the time off. Not this year, folks. 2009 is a year of change!
Actually, we've been invited to a wedding. Elliott's friend and former labmate is getting married Labor Day weekend, and we've been invited (hilariously, the invitation came to "Dr. and Mrs. Hulley"). Elliott's okay with going because his boss was also invited, so it's not like he'll be missing work, and I'm down with it because I have a goodly number of annual leave days plus it's a 3 day weekend. Oh, and this wedding happens to be in Seattle.
Seattle! A whole other coast away; I've never been farther west than Wyoming (and all I did was eat lunch there before driving east to South Dakota). We finally booked the hotel and plane tickets last night, so we are officially going to be spending 5 nights, kind of six days there (our return trip we'll be traveling from 6 am to 11 pm). In addition to the wedding, which looks to be at
a very fancy place, I've been thinking of places to visit while there. Here's what I've got:
The Space Needle Duh. We'll probably dine in the restaurant, but for which meal is still up for debate. It will officially be our 5th anniversary that weekend, so why not splurge?
The Museum of Flight Interesting factoid about Elliott: At one point in his adolescence he wanted to join the air force. Since shitty eyes have kept him from that career, this is the next best thing. They even have space flight exhibits, so we may have to bring along an extra pair of pants for him.
An Underground Tour of old Seattle, before they actually raised the whole f'n city up one story after the Great Seattle Fire.
The Science Fiction Museum It's actually the Experience Music Project/ Science Fiction Museum; I guess they didn't have enough funding for both to have their own museum. Whatever, I'm easy.
Fran's Chocolates I didn't know this place existed until my supervisor, fresh from a week long conference in Seattle herself, brought back a box of "Barack Obama's favorite candy" today and shared it with us. It was caramel dipped in dark chocolate with sea salt on top and it was delicious. Now I must go there myself and gorge. And if I'm feeling nice, bring back a chocolate dipped fig stuffed with dark chocolate for my coworker.
Pike Place Market Because I'm getting the impression it's a Seattle must. And I like markets.
Places I've had recommended to me are the Public Library and Top Pot's Doughnuts. Anyone else have any suggestions?
