wow it's been forever since I updated. Well, I'm here in Rhode Island, I've been here several weeks, and I'm feeling pretty secure in my new home.
It's a lot of work that I'm expected to do. It's stressful and tiring, but it's the sort of stuff I don't mind staying up all night doing. Maybe that's a lie; I need sleep, but it's wonderful to feel like I'm productive and growing.
I had a rough critique of my work this week. I didn't receive any positive feedback about my work. It was frustrating at first, but I was given so many ideas on how to get better, I don't feel so bad anymore.
I saw corpse bride! Wow! The claymation was VERY well done. The plot was entertaining, the art was beautiful, the jokes were clever, the music was great, there were people in the audience weeping at the end. I think if you go to see the movie expecting it to be like an action film or some modern break through in computer graphics, you'll be disappointed. This movie takes a step backward to a more primitive and expressive style of animation. Watch it to be awed by artistic wit, not special effects.
There was something called "the pit" in my cafeteria this evening. The cooking staff made special food, and there was free cake, and a drag queen came to sing to us. She (used to be a man) could sing like Whitney Houston. It was amazing! I felt kind of bad for her though, because she kept making jokes (they were timed perfectly- she got laughs every time) about how she would go get drunk after the show. I'm certain they were not told entirely in jest.
I'm excited about something called the "Artist's Ball." It's like the RISD Halloween party. Everyone makes a costume and goes to dance the night away- but it's not on Halloween (I'm still trying to find a place to trick-or-treat. Everyone tells me there's just no where safe to do that in Providence). I'm going to go as a zombie- I'm going to go crazy with face paint. Everyone gets their picture taken in their costume, and the picture gets entered in a contest. The winner of the contest gets two tickets to some tropical island for spring break. That would be fun.
I was early to my english class, and I had to wait with some other students for the teacher to come let us in. I discovered that they are not at all enjoying the class, or the assigned readings. I was surprised, because I've been really getting into it. My teacher's very interested in individuality, and slavery of different kinds, and african american literature. I didn't get to learn much about african american literature in high school, so it's kind of fascinating to me now. There were maybe five of the twenty students in class today paying attention and participating in discussion. That bothers me.
