It's been a quiet week, but then Saturday happened....

Or, more to the point, THIS happened.

It was A tribute to 50 years of Marshall amplifiers. It was such a shame that Jim Marshall didn't live to see it, because it was a hell of a night.

d_floorlandmine drove us to Wembley Arena, and I suppose we weren't quite sure what to expect. What we got, was fabulous.

We were a touch late due to traffic, and very odd parking directions, but we got there.

Al Murray was compere for the night, and a bloody fine job he did too. He is a drummer, in addition to his comedy career, and later in the evening Brian Tichy gave up his drum kit so that Al could take over for a while. He got us all singing "We Will Rock You." just by playing the drum line. He also has a fine way of dealing with hecklers. I think he was as excited as anyone, and more than a bit overwhelmed!

I don't think I have ever seen quite so many guitar based musicians in one place.

The highlight for me was Joe Satriani, because I have never seen him live, and he is simply amazing. Okay, we also had Yngwie Malmsteen along, who is a technically amazing guitarist, but his music does not move me. To be truthful, after the first few bars, and the first few "Blimey how does he do that?" I'm bored, because it's seemingly all about Yngwie, and not the guitar.

Joe's music holds me in thrall. He makes his guitar sing, and it can bring me to tears. He played Always with Me, Always With You, and I just sat there with tears rolling down my face. silenttex has introduced me to so much guitar music over the years, and Joe's sound always reminds me of him.

I was also blown away by Glenn Hughes voice. He's nearly 60, and the power he still has, and the range, is stunning. He truly is the voice of rock. Even if you don't know the name, you would recognise that voice.

The other person who totally awed me was Brian Tichy. The man is a beast on the drums, and he was absolutely amazing to watch. The sheer skill of the man is stunning. It helps that he is rather easy on the eye too of course.

Nicko McBrain in a suit was rather surprising, but he soon reverted to his drummer's uniform.

All in all, it was a fabulous night, and I am incredibly grateful to valkyriekaren for spotting the tickets, and to Simon for buying them.

50 years of loud
