Piper was glad to have a job that mostly didn't require her to work on weekends. This just happened to be one of those lucky weekends off. Today was her birthday. She didn't want to spend it at the restaurant preparing birthday dinners for other people. Really ( Read more... )

"You know," Lindsey said, walking up behind her. "I would have baked you something. Not sure it would have been edible but I would have tried."

He would have been better off, most likely, buying something from a bakery himself. But he knew whatever he picked out wouldn't be as good as the things Piper usually baked. Not that Lindsey was biased or anything.

Lindsey shook his head. "Nah. Cupcake's probably better than anything I could've made. Plus the frosting's way prettier. Thought I'd take you out for dinner instead. What're you up for?"

"You mean I can't have this cupcake for dinner?" Piper said, shaking her head in amusement. More seriously, she added, "I don't know. I could go for anything. Surprise me?"

It was her birthday after all. Surprises were a requirement.

Lindsey pretended not to see the Look. Lindsey was taking his life into his own hands here.

"Oh, definitely just the one order. Need to save room for that cupcake."

He was going to get exploded and it was going to be entirely his own fault.

"Comedic timing works wonders in a courtroom," Lindsey explained. "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be." Which was sort of true. He was with Piper, after all.

"You want dessert first or you wanna head out now? No fast food. I promise."

"Good." This time, her smile was genuine. "And dessert after the main entree, have I taught you nothing about food?"

Her tone was no longer full of sarcasm. Now, it was very lighthearted and kind of adorable.
