I don't know if it makes a difference, but I always slow cook it with broth (for at least 8 hours, more if possible) and then mix it with bbq sauce after it's shredded.
If you have leftovers, it's good to use the cooking liquid and/or fat to pour over them; seals themeat from air and keeps it moister, fresher/prevents freezerburn, plus it makes reheating easier. The liquid also makes excellent stock for soups and sauces.
