Ham bone!

I done got myself a ham bone after Thanksgiving, that I immediately froze until a proper weekend came along when I have the luxury of doing something with it. That weekend is now. I've never cooked with a ham bone before but I'm excited to try it! (my family was originally going to throw it out and I was like "what the hell are you doing?!?")

Yeah, it's pretty indispensable for split pea soup. When it's left out, it's noticeably missing because the soup tastes like sad.

I don't have a recipe but I always make lentil soup with a ham bone.

Rinsed a bag of lentils and check for stones.

Dump the following into a crockpot:
clean lentils
couple 8oz cans of tomato sauce or diced tomatoes or tomato paste (this is about cleaning out the cupboard/fridge)
ham bone or ham hock
handful of chopped carrots
2-3 chopped cloves of garlic
handful of chopped onion
enough water to cover everything.

Let it cook on low until the lentils are done and the wonderful smell drives you to grab a spoon.

This and Garbage soup were staples of our diet growing up during the winter and I love a big bowl of lentil soup with a squirt of ketchup.

Lol, I love that others make 'garbage' soup as well. They usually end up the best soups, but sadly can rarely be repeated a second time because really..who ever rights down the recipes for them?!

I've never tried this, but I bet you could make some excellent stewed collard greens, adding that bone to the pot.

it's cold and orrible, so I enthusiastically endorse the "pea and ham soup" suggestions.

Add a little white vinegar to the water you're simmering the bone in - a couple of tablespoons at most - and that will help leach out some of the calcium in the bone into the stock. Bone stock is awesome stuff :)

Make broth out of it and use that as the base for cheesy potato soup.

Ham bones and soup are always a good combination!
