Will I get sick from eating this?

I was trying to make some chicken curry in the slow cooker last night. A little over 2 hours into cooking (on low), I realized that I had added too much liquid, so I removed some and saved it in the fridge. This morning I used that liquid to thin out the curry a little. I just ate some an hour ago, but then I realized that maybe the liquid I ( Read more... )

When you say you cooked it on low, did it ever reach a boil? Did you let it simmer? If yes, then it's fine.

I'm not sure if it reached a boil, it was a pretty full pot and I hadn't been paying attention to it. The liquid level was rising though, I don't know if that means anything.

I guess it was boiling/close to a boil for a long time, so you're fine. Reheat the curry/liquid properly next time you eat it.

Here's my recommendation as a food microbiologist (but NOT a doctor):

Don't eat any more. Save a portion of the broth in a sterile container in your refridgerator. Monitor yourself for diarrhea and food poisoning like symptoms.

If those occur and are severe, go to the doctor. If they're severe enough that you see the doctor, he might ask for a sample of the food. This way you have the sample to send out for testing so they can identify that the food caused the illness.

Honestly, in all likelihood you'll be fine.

If you want to keep eating what you made, heat to these internal temperatures to kill bacteria! Temperature chart here

Haha sterile container... spoken like a true microbiologist! :)

I will watch for possible food poisoning and heat my food properly when I eat it again. Thanks!

When you added the liquid, did you continue to cook the curry? I think that as long as the food got hot and sustained that heat for at least 5 minute, you should be fine, since you refrigerated the liquid after removing it tr 1st time.

According to my ServSafe training, you should throw it all out, but my instinct is to go with taram_42's advice, to save some in a clean container and monitor yourself ( ... )

Thanks for the tips! So far I've gotten to the 8 hour mark and I'm still doing okay. I reheated the leftovers so I have more peace of mind eating it now. :)

Not much you can do for the part that you've already eaten, but if you bring the remaining curry to a boil, it should be safe to eat.
Here's hoping it was already safe though :)
