Not so much a substitution suggestion, but by golly, the honey ice cream here is heavenly:

The first few are machine-free while the rest seem to need a machine. But HONEY ICE CREAM!!! With strawberries, so yummy.

All the ice cream machine is doing is breaking up the ice crystals as it freezes, so if you are around to keep stirring it occasionally, there's no reason you can't make any recipe in the freezer.

Look for some vegan ice cream recipes, they usually use things like almond milk and coconut milk and are healthy options.

Banana ice cream:

Frozen pureed banana allows for endless mix-in and flavor combos - the banana flavor is only really pronounced if you do it plain. Plus, super-healthy and dirt cheap. It's been my go-to dessert all summer :)

As kids, my mom used to put ice cream mix inside a coffee can, which was inside a second, larger coffee can. Ice and salt surrounded the smaller can. Then she'd send us kids into the backyard and tell us to roll it back and forth between us.

Got us outta her hair for a good 30+ minutes. Smart mom. ;)

I was going to suggest this as well. I have 2 ice cream balls that do the same thing, I always let my students use them after school at the end of the year. Not sure what is more amusing, the songs and games they come up with to roll the ball all over my room...or their shock they can make good ice cream with under 5 ingredients!!

We did this in chemistry class once. Great fun, and made the best iced cream I've ever tasted, hands-down!

I believe we used cheap driveway-melting rock salt instead of pricier table salt, too.
