The sun was setting in The Desert, but the air was stagnant and humid.
"What a...quaint place."
"And it's definitely not anything like Riverblossom Hills"
"I'd better go inside."
"Ahem, hello there".
The teenager ignored Freya.
She tried again. "Um, hi sorry to bother you but - "
She was cut off by the wolves on TV.
A horror film, it seemed.
"Hey, honestly, sorry to bother you but I really - "
Once again she was cut off and met with a deadly glare.
The TV remote clicked. The sound of howling wolves were gone, but she still felt like she was watching a horror film of her own.
"What."
"Um, I'd like a room for the night."
Definitely a quaint place, Freya thought.
"It'll have to do for now I suppose."
Maybe a good meal would help her get over the current state of things.
"It's true! I swear to Sim!God I saw it. It had glowing eyes and fangs!"
"Uhg, stop it Taron. That's not funny, you're horrible.", Chloe whined.
"But it's true! I'm not lying."
"My girlfriend believes me, right?"
"Unless your girlfriend's an idiot, not likely. Besides, you're scaring her so just stop it. It's getting late anyways."
"And look, Grace is already asleep."
"Ugh, G you're heavy."
Beth kissed his cheek lightly, "I'll see you soon okay cowboy. Stay safe tonight."
"Yes ma'am", he chimed.
"Well well, new blood!"
"Welcome to The Desert, stranger!"
"Do I stick out that much...?"
"Hm, yes."
"Also, I saw you get out of the bus. It's a small town, I know almost everyone here."
"The names Joyce, my wife's in the kitchen cooking and I think you've met my charming girl, Marcy." Joyce grabbed the pitcher of water and poured a glass for Freya. " 'Fraid unlike Srangetown, The Desert's nights are as unforgiving as its day, so you'd better hydrate."
Freya took the glass and thanked her.
"So, I'm guessing you're the new hydroponics expert the good ol' mayor hired from garden city?"
"Wow, it really is a small town."
Joyce let out a little chuckle. "The mayor's been trying to come up with new ways of getting our little desert self sustaining. Let's say, he's really passionate about getting our town recognized by Sim City." She took out the diner's menu and Freya ordered the blueberry pie.
"So guess everyone's expecting me, huh?"
"Well no one really ever comes to The Desert for anything, Strangetown's already got us beat with their local aliens. But you know, we do get the occassional tourists and scientists that come to out little town hoping to discover something. 'Fraid no ones been too successful." Joyce grimaced. "But, I hope you'll find something here that may surprise you."
Just as Freya was about to question her odd comment, Joyce turned to her wife in the kitchen and shouted for her pie.
"Well well, it's getting late now, if i'm not mistaken tomorrow's when the mayor anounces you as our agricultural savior", she pointed to her imaginary watch, "better get some sleep."
"Um, yeah...sure. Thank you for your hospitality."
"Oh! Be sure to come back again, and do triple lock your doors. It's an old building."
"Don't let the bedbugs bite! Or something else."
"Big day tomorrow, I'd better get some shut eye."
Ahhh, I missed making these short little stories so much! I'm still so rusty, but I miss this :'^)
