Neal flies over the ocean.
He has flown so many places in his life, seen so many landscapes rolled out beneath him: mountains, forests, deserts, vast expanses of ice and snow. All of them beautiful in their own way, all of them looking like painstakingly painted canvases from afar. But there’s nothing like the ocean.
It’s always been there for him, always managed to somehow mirror his deepest feelings. When he’s been angry, lost and torn apart, the sea has roared underneath him, waves mounting and crashing into each other, the storm raging inside him and out. When he’s been empty and broken-hearted, the ocean has stretched unending before him, cold and clear as glass, echoing his solitude.
Tonight, the ocean is calm, but not lonely. It ripples in the moonlight, soft waves rolling gently. It seems to breathe, a gentle whisper that swooshes through the cool night air, rising and falling as Neal soars in cloudless skies. It is beautiful.
He is glad that he picked such a perfect night to take Peter flying for the first time.
“This is…Neal, this is...” Peter’s voice comes from beneath him, almost drawn away on the breeze. His back is clasped to Neal’s chest, Neal’s arms holding him tight while they fly, slow and smooth.
“I know,” Neal murmurs back. He understands the speechlessness. Flying still leaves him without words, and he’s been doing it for years. It’s never been like this before, though. He’s never flown with someone he loves like Peter. And every breath that Peter takes, every gasp of wonder or sigh of content, ripples through Neal’s body, right to the tips of his outstretched wings.
Peter has done what Neal didn’t know was possible: he has made flying better.
