I need some fundie catch phrases

The grocery store across the street from my house has an employee that is a very faithful catholic.  She sets up a little shrine  at her register every time she works. It's complete with little saint medals, pictures and little handwritten bible verses. I would like to complain about this. I know that if I make a frontal assault of "Get that ( Read more... )

Have you ever heard of religious tolerance?

So, the beliefs of non-religious people should be tolerated, but not those of religious people?

Yes.
The religious beliefs of non-religious people should be tolerated, but not those of religious people.

Wow, just let it slide and don't be a douche about it. It's not cool to be a dick to someone in her workplace, especially if you aren't actually offended, which you are not. You just want to stir up drama. Grow up.

I'm not wanting to stir up trouble with her, but to send a letter to management to make them take it down.

i'm pretty sure they'll do just fine without your business. It's probably beneficial to them actually, because most people don't care, and there are probably more catholics that shop there than peopFrom: [info]sleyiseemaydee Picture to use: Helple of your attitude.

Most stores/companies don't like losing any customers, much less regular ones.

If she's not actively trying to convert you then you have absolutely nothing legitimate to complain about. Leave her alone. The grocery store is not public property, and obviously her boss and the owners don't have a problem with it. The one with the problem here is you, and if its that big of a deal shop somewhere else.

I do try to use other cashiers, but sometimes that's not an option.

I don't think I understand this. Why does it bother you?

I am forced to vote in a church. I get religious flyers with my sons homework (He goes to a public school even) I would like to be able to buy food without having someone else's religion forced down my throat.

How does someone setting up a shrine "force religion down your throat"?
You seem to be out for an argument.

Perhaps I should have said "Be forced to look at another person's religious icons" Not looking at the cashier in a grocery store is problematic and best, so I have to look at her and her shrine when I use her as a cashier. If the checkout lines are long, I cannot tell who thw cashier is until it is to late.
Also, the shrine is cheaply done, and looks tacky.

I agree with the comments above. Why does it matter? She is having fun and not bothering anyone, so as long as she is polite about it I think you should let it go.

The woman has a scowl on her face all the time. I don't think she is having fun.

Working as a cashier isn't fun. I speak from experience. Perhaps her shrine is something that lets her get through her day by giving her relief or peace of some kind. I also understand why it gets on your nerves. The phenomenon of Second Hand Religion (just like second hand smoke)can be really obnoxious.

To my mind, displaying saints, gods, troll dolls, or pics of celebrities at one's place of employment shouldn't be a problem. So long as you aren't discussing these things with clients or trying to convert them to your love of whatever. The people who leave bible tracts in piles of Harry Potter books bother me a lot more.

I think that the overload of all these other kinds of Second Hand Religion (street preachers, Church-centric voting, etc...) is causing you to project your anger on this woman and her relatively harmless display.
