Well, our month of local eating began on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. At this point, it doesn't really seem like a huge deal, or even a challenge. I'm on the last chapter of Plenty, a book written by a couple in Vancouver, B.C. who ate local (100- ( Read more... )

Wow, now I'm really hungry. Reading your post makes me think about veganism, vegetarianism, and 100-mile diet in the context of Ukraine. If I don't venture out to the supermarket I pretty much just live off of tomatoes, cucumbers, bread, mayonaise, pasta, cheese, onions, and garlic, oh and frozen pierogies! I buy most of my fruits and veggies off the street and go to local small grocery stores to get cheese, bread, water, mayo, canned beans, tuna, jared eggplants, pasta, etc. Minus the pre-packaged foods, I know that most of what I buy is local and fresh. But still, most of the packaged food is at least domestic.

Nutritional yeast, earth balance, fake meats, etc, are non-existant in ukraine, but one can find a limited amount of soy products; just the basics of milk, pudding, and some Polish-brand of tofu that looks kind of suspicious. i bought it but still have not tried it out. oh, however, TVP is pretty widespread here, which is awesome, different flavors and different sizes. So overall, vegetarianism is pretty do-able, veganism on the other hand, would be quite tough and you would have never be able to eat out. they love butter and mayonaise in this country, its hard to find salad that isnt drowning in mayo.

Supermarkets have a pretty big selection, but nothing at all like in the states. You can find various spices, frozen veggies, bbq sauce, ginger, only in a few can you find peanutbutter.

Anyhow, i'm really excited to read up on your experiences this month, and i am really impressed in what you have been eating! makes my daily grilled cheese sandwich with tomato, onion, garlic salt, and mayo look so boring!
