Synopsis: “Do you like bubbles, Toshi?” The little boy nodded and pulled his hands apart to clap, sending bubbles flying. “Maybe some day I’ll show you how to blow bubbles with your hands.” The blonde beamed and instructed Toshi to wash his hands off. Once done, Toshi was standing and Uruha was drying his hands with a towel. Motherly; that’s what Uruha was. It made so much sense! He was pretty and cute like a girl, and he was really nice. Uruha was like a mommy. He could be Toshi’s mommy, since he didn’t really have one.
Comment: At the end.
“So let me get this straight,” Reita was sitting in the rehearsal room with his bass over his lap as his fingers lazily plucked at the strings. The day hadn’t even started yet since Kai hadn’t arrived, so the four present members were sitting around on the couches while Toshi and Doki ran around aimlessly. “your mother wants to take you to court over Toshi because she doesn’t think you have a healthy lifestyle?” Or something along those lines, he had stopped listening after he heard ‘she wants to take Toshi‘ because his mind automatically went into overdrive to think of ways to keep the kid around. It wasn’t every day that a member of their band had to go to court to fight tooth and nail against their own mother.
He stared at Aoi as he drank a cup of coffee, one that Reita knew was blistering hot, but the guitarist didn’t seem to mind as he gulped it down with a pathetic expression on his face. When Toshi was around, Aoi acted as if nothing was wrong and that it was just another normal day, but as soon as the child’s back was turned, his expression became one of worry and he seemed to sulk. It was understandable, of course everyone in the band knew just how close Aoi was to his brother; Aoi was practically Toshi’s father as well, so he not only had the protectiveness of an older brother, but that of a parental figure.
“How is my lifestyle any different than any other musician who has a child to take care of?” Aoi spoke quietly so his brother didn’t hear him. He still hadn’t informed Toshi about what was going on, and he really wasn’t sure if he should even though he knew he would have to in the end. “I don’t go out to clubs or bars, I don’t drink, when I have to work I make sure someone is with him at all times, someone I trust, and I take him with me everywhere I go providing it’s appropriate for him. I don’t see how I’m doing anything wrong.” Maybe he should hire a babysitter to watch Toshi while he worked, but he didn’t know anyone who would be willing to help him out, and he wouldn’t send his brother off to someone he didn’t even know.
“It’s not different.” Ruki joined in, leaning forward with a cigarette in his hand and a sketchbook on his lap. His eyes were downcast on whatever he was drawing as his left hand moved toward the ashtray beside him. “The only difference is you don’t have a wife to stay home with Toshi. Sugizo has a kid, but he also had a wife who took care of her. Because you’re the only person taking care of Toshi, that’s going to become the problem.” Aoi’s mother would use anything she could to her benefit, and the fact Aoi was a so-called single rock star wouldn’t make matters any better. “The only option you really have is to get someone to watch Toshi while you’re working and touring.”
Aoi sighed, sitting his now-empty cup of coffee on the table. “Other than the four of you, I don’t know of anyone who would be willing to keep an eye on him.” His own brothers were too busy with their own jobs, not to mention Toshi didn’t really know them. Their mother had kept Toshi away from his older siblings with the excuse of ‘you should have visited’, and Aoi was too busy to take him to them and vise versa. Toshi simply wouldn’t sit with someone he didn’t know; he was too shy.
Uruha scratched the back of his neck. There was one person Toshi sort of knew who could take care of him that wasn’t a member of the band but related to the band. It was the only other person he would stay with without a single complaint. “What about Kai’s mom?”
“That could work.” Reita glanced at the little boy who was running around the opposite end of the room with his teddy bear in his arms. “Whenever she comes to visit he asks if he can stay with her for ‘just a little bit’.” He mocked Toshi’s voice with a smirk.
Aoi shook his head, crossing one leg over the other. “I don’t know. He’s my responsibility and-”
“And it’s your best option at the moment.” Uruha cut him off, sending him a look that clearly said he was going to listen and call Kai’s mother. “She’ll understand the situation and be willing to look after him. You see how she is with him! She doesn’t have any grandchildren and Kai is all grown up now, so she wants a child around to look after and play with. In her mind Toshi is like the grandchild she never had, and will probably never have if Kai doesn’t start making babies.”
The door to the rehearsal room closed as Kai walked by, plopping himself down on the opposite side of Reita. “Kai is gay and doesn’t want to make babies. Why are you talking about that anyways?” He looked at the blonde guitarist, raising an eyebrow.
Uruha sighed, “To make a long story short, Kaeda wants to take Aoi to court to get Toshi. The big problem is his lifestyle and the fact he has no wife to watch Toshi while he works. I was thinking that your mom could watch him.” He shrugged as Kai chuckled.
“I suppose it could work, but you’d have to actually talk to her about it. Personally I don’t think that would work much seeing as how much of an asshole Aoi’s mom is. If she really wants Toshi back, she’s going to find some sort of issue with another woman watching her child.” Kai sat back comfortably. “She would view it as Toshi seeing my mom as his mom, which we know isn’t true but she doesn’t.”
“But it’s not like she actually cares about Toshi.” Aoi cut in bitterly, glancing to the side to make sure his brother couldn’t hear their conversation. “He’s past the age of crying all the time, and he’s just the right age for her to begin terrorizing him and making his life a living hell. That’s why she wants him, not because she wants to be the perfect mother and take care of him. If she was the perfect mother she never would have abandoned him.”
He didn’t care what he had to do to keep his brother. He refused to let his mother win because he knew exactly what would happen and he knew what it could do to a person from experience.
---
Toshi and Doki squatted by the corner of the rehearsal room, staring at the floor with wide eyes. Somewhere behind them the band was talking among themselves, but, as Toshi decided, they were being weird and he didn’t want to spend time with them. Every time he would go near them, they would stop talking and look at him and he couldn’t figure out why. Doki told him he didn’t have anything on his face, and he was wearing his clothes the right way, so he didn’t know why they kept staring.
Ever since the day before, Aoi had been acting stranger than normal; he even let Toshi sleep in his room, and that almost never happened unless the little boy had a nightmare or there was a thunderstorm. Toshi simply couldn’t figure out what had happened, and he didn’t want to ask just in case Aoi didn’t want him to know. Even Uruha was acting weird, and although he was usually weird, it was a different kind of weird. Toshi had their attention all the time, and he noticed that even while the band was talking behind him, they were still keeping an eye on him and not in the usual way they had to because he was just a child.
He stared down at the floor through his wide eyes and nudged the bug there with his finger as he thought. Maybe he had to do something so they didn’t focus so much on him. It was kind of uncomfortable to feel eyes on him all the time, and he really didn’t like it. Now he had Ruki, Reita, and Kai staring at him, which made matters worse.
“Doki~” He looked at the other little boy with big eyes, smiling cutely. “You’s has to stracts dem.”
Doki looked at him for a moment, and without a word he stood up and ran over to the adults, but not before picking up Kai-chan and thrusting him in Ruki’s face. From the corner, Toshi could hear his friend telling the adults how Kai-chan was his and Toshi’s baby, and how Toshi couldn’t take care of him all by himself, so he had to help. He giggled to himself when he noticed the adults all paying attention to Doki and looked back down at the bug.
“You’s comes wiff me Mr. Woachie.” He smiled sweetly, scooping the roach into his hand and putting his other hand over it so no one would know what he had. With a quick glance toward the adults, he ran around to the back of the couch and peeked around the side just as Doki had jumped up and ran toward Uruha with all the men watching him.
Toshi giggled to himself when he spotted his target and moved forward slowly. He looked up at the men to make sure they didn’t notice him, and quickly slipped the roach into Ruki’s coffee cup. Pressing his hands against his mouth to hold in his giggles, he quietly ran back around the back of the couch and to the corner where he had previously been sitting.
“Doki~” He held his little arms out, wiggling his tiny fingers impatiently. “Kai-chan!” He pouted, tilting his head to the side as Doki looked at him.
“You’s has to getties heem.” Doki stuck his tongue out, holding the bear up to his uncle and continuing to tell the blonde all about how Kai-chan had to go to bed early because he had to go to school in the morning like a big boy.
Toshi scrunched his face up and pouted, moving to stand and ran across the room. “Givies Kai-chan, Doki!” He climbed up onto the couch, using his brother’s legs as a ladder, and pulled his bear away from the other boy. “He no likies when you’s takies heem from me.” He cradled the bear against his chest and moved to sit with his brother.
Ruki looked up from his sketchbook briefly, “You should learn to say ‘please’, kid.” He smirked as Toshi stuck his tongue out.
“You’s learns to no be stupids.” Toshi giggled, watching as Ruki put his sketchbook off to the side with his pencil balanced on top of it. He leaned forward and reached for his cup of coffee, and all Toshi could do was wrap his free arm around his brother’s neck and watch as Ruki took a drink.
He knew the instant Ruki’s lips hit the rim that the vocalist knew something was wrong with his drink, and it wasn’t until he looked down that he spit coffee out everywhere, spraying it all over Kai and Reita.
“Fuck, Taka!!” Reita jumped up, pulling on his shirt and trying to cool the hot coffee. Of all the places to spit it, it just had to be at him.
“Seriously!” Kai growled, bringing a hand up to wipe his face.
Toshi giggled, covering his mouth and holding onto his brother tighter. Ruki jumped up and screamed, using the sleeve of his shirt to wipe his mouth and tongue as he jumped onto the couch cushion and frantically pointed at the table where a roach was crawling around. He spluttered and coughed almost dramatically as his index finger turned and pointed toward the little boy who only looked back at him with a small amused smile.
“YOU.“ The vocalist glared at the child, placing a hand on his throat as if he had just been poisoned.
Toshi scrunched up his face and glared back at him, holding onto his brother. He had never seen Ruki look so mad before, and he knew now that if Aoi found out that he had put a roach in Ruki’s coffee cup, he’d be in big trouble.
“You did this you little brat.” Ruki spoke angrily and visibly shook.
Uruha glared, patting Toshi’s head. “How could he have done it? He has been playing this entire time or here with us.” The last time he actually looked over at Toshi, he had been playing in the corner with Doki until Doki took Kai-chan and ran over to them.
“Were you watching him the entire time?!” Ruki yelled. “He had to of done it. Who else would do something like that?!” Toshi hated Ruki and he would do anything to get on his nerves, and putting a roach in a cup of coffee was something only a child, or ignorant teen, would do. No one in the band had done it, and Doki had been talking to Uruha most of the time, so that only left Toshi.
“How do you know it didn’t just crawl onto the table?” Aoi raised an eyebrow, holding his brother.
“Because we would have noticed it.” Ruki glared again.
“We would have noticed Toshi.” Aoi argued back, picking up Toshi and sitting him on his lap.
Ruki rolled his eyes and shook his head. Toshi was quiet, especially if he was up to something. If Toshi was trying to prank someone, he would become so silent that no one would ever notice him, and it was just like Toshi to be mean to Ruki. “Yeah right. That kid becomes extremely silent when he’s up to something and you know it.” The vocalist crossed his arms over his chest briefly before squealing when he caught sight of the roach again. “Akira, kill the fucking thing!”
Reita snorted and shook his head. Of course he had noticed Toshi putting the roach in Ruki’s coffee, but that’s just what Ruki got for picking on the kid all the time. And even though he was Ruki’s boyfriend, he was completely on Toshi’s side. He wouldn’t say anything about seeing Toshi do it, but he’d help him by not killing it.
“You’re a man, you kill it. If Toshi supposedly did it, then why can’t you touch it?” He raised an eyebrow, winking at the little boy. “Is Toshi more of a man than you, Taka?”
Ruki’s eyebrows knitted in fury as he dove at the bassist. “Kill the fucking thing before I kill you!”
Kai snorted, standing and moving over to the coffee machine to get another cup for the vocalist. “If you kill Reita, then who the hell is going to kill it for you?” He sure as hell wasn’t going to kill it, Uruha wouldn’t kill it, and Aoi wouldn’t either. It would just be more amusing for them to watch Ruki squeal like a little girl. It was a nice change from his normal self. With a shrug he sat down and handed the cup of coffee over to Ruki and watched the bug move around.
Doki jumped up quickly and climbed off his uncle and over Aoi’s and Toshi’s legs. “I’s kills it!” Because if he killed it, then that would make Ruki like him more and not like Reita as much because Reita refused to kill it! If he did a really, really good job at killing it, then Ruki would leave Reita for him and Toshi could finally have Reita. It was the perfect plan! Toshi was smart for putting that roach in his coffee. He had a feeling the roach would meet Ruki when they found it, but he didn’t think Toshi would do something as good as putting it in his coffee.
The roach was crawling on the center of the coffee table away from everyone’s cups of coffee and away from their cigarettes. With a giggle and side glance at Ruki, Doki jumped off the couch and onto the table, stomping his little feet and squishing the bug. “Die~” He scrunched up his face and continued to stomp until the bug was crushed and nothing but a paste on the table.
“Ryo!” Uruha shook his head, picking up the kid. “Now we have to clean your shoes so you don’t get bug guts all over the floor.”
“And you have to clean the table.” Aoi chuckled, making faces at Toshi. “Because, y’know, your nephew, your responsibility.” He chuckled as Toshi scrunched his face up at him and pinched the little boy’s cheeks in return.
Uruha rolled his eyes and moved out of the room to clean Doki’s shoes as Toshi giggled. “Ruru screamies like a guuurrrlll~” He laughed and leaned forward so his nose was touching Aoi’s.
“I do not!” Ruki shot back. “If I sound like a girl then you look like one!”
Toshi glared. “Not uhs, Ruru!”
“Yes huhs, Toshi!” Ruki stuck his tongue out. “You’re the one who wears shorts and skips and prances and squeals about cute duckies and kitty cats!”
Toshi stood up and stomped over to the vocalist and stood on his legs. There was nothing wrong with wearing shorts! Mommy wore shorts! And skipping and prancing was fun, and duckies and kitty cats were cute and soft.
He put his hands on his hips and leaned forward, glaring at Ruki as much as he could. “I’S A BABY!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, causing Ruki to blink rapidly and lean away from him.
The vocalist chuckled and picked Toshi up and sat him on the cushion beside him. “And what does that have to do with anything?” He knew he was just getting on the kid’s nerves, but he really didn’t care; he just had a roach in his mouth, so Toshi had it coming.
“Babies likies cutie duckies and kitty-kitties, and skippies and pwancies, and wear shorties!” The little boy yelled again, slapping Ruki’s thigh (as if that actually hurt).
“No hitting, Toshi.” Aoi gave him a pointed look and went back to watching the two smallest people in the room argue. It was amusing how Ruki was getting so worked up over the little things Toshi said and did. Why Ruki was so easily offended by a three-year-old was beyond his comprehension, but he also knew Ruki liked him. Without Toshi around, everyone in the band would be bored, especially Ruki. The day was never complete without some pointless argument or prank between the two.
Toshi turned to him and stuck his little tongue out, putting his hands on his hips and wiggling them. Why couldn’t he hit Ruki? He needed a good beating for being so stupid all the time, and as soon as his brother stopped looking or left the room, he was going to make sure Ruki got the beating he deserved. With a nod to himself, he jumped down off the couch as Uruha entered the room again with Doki trailing along behind him; he’d get Ruki eventually.
A/N: This was a very unproductive chapter, but this was more of a "I'm trying to update with at least something" chapter as well as a way for me to start stirring it in the direction I plan to go. I don't want to completely focus on the issue with Aoi's mother, so chances are I won't actually cover the court scene because the focus of the story and main character is Toshi (who obviously won't be present during the entire court scene). I know how I'm going to continue on, but explaining it would just be a jumbled mess of words, so you'll have to wait. ♥
I apologize for taking four months to update this. Half of the time I completely forgot about it, so I'm going to attempt to remind myself to write more often so you guys don't have to sit there and wait for updates.
And if you're still reading, please comment to let me know! ♥
