Moody hates his birthday. Or rather, he hates peoples' attempts to throw surprise parties- he doesn't like surprises- or to otherwise make him celebrate a day he'd really much rather just ignore.
He volunteers for duty at the Ministry on his birthday, as he does most holidays-the other days of the year when his friends can be counted on to, in their well-meaning but interfering ways, try to drag him to gatherings he doesn't want any part of in a misguided attempt to look after him.
Alastor Moody does not need looking after, and the next person who says differently is going to find out just why that's true.
Technically, he's really not supposed to hex his fellow Aurors- or anyone else not currently wanted by the Ministry for any crimes- but he gets annoyed when those well-meaning busybodies won't leave him alone, and, well, accidents happen. They really ought to know better, anyway.
