I actually find myself moved to post about the fancy of brokering the Republican convention. Just about all the talk I'd seen about it has been from the point-of-view of all parties contra-Trump, so I took the mental exercise of thinking about an alternative Trump supporters may actually prefer to their very flawed champion.
There are people, after all, who have publicly held the views that attracted voters to The Donald in the first place. Not all of them ran for president as Reform Party candidates. There actually was a guy at CNN other than Pat Buchanan that held those views. His was the last show of any popularity (documentaries about whales excluded, of course) on that network.
Yes, folks, good ol' folksy Lou Dobbs has publicly expressed the same views on immigration and trade that Donald only recently latched onto. And he did it consistantly on radio, television, and print. And he's done it without all the headscratching behavior.
He isn't really a compromise candidate, policy-wise. He gives away everything to Trump supporters, really. But, up to this point, haven't they had all the advantages, anyway? I think I can promise Republicans that he won't embarrass them with any sort of crude behavior, and will be as electable as these policies possibly can be. There's a lot less down-side, electorally, to him. And less damage to the party brand, in many ways.
Bill Kristol would cry, but if I understand the NeverTrump stuff, most of those folks are most angry about the personality and character of Donald Trump, right? Lou Dobbs might still be a bit of a crap sandwich to many of them, but is he a little more digestible?
