I always look forward to Christmas.
One of the reasons I look forward to it is the awesome bunch of people I get to hang out with.
The extended family I hang out with is a highly educated bunch of caring people; doctors, pharmacists, teachers, lawyers, engineers, graphic designers etc etc.
Many of whom have filthy senses of humour. But all of whom are caring, loving and tolerant individuals.
Now, when I say extended family, I should clarify.
My mother was an only child.
My father came from a family of 5. He has 3 kids, one brother and one sister have none, the other brother has 2, and the other sister has ...7.
So, my extended family is entirely my fathers side, and largely dominated by this family.
But reflecting on this, and things that my father has said to me over the last few years, I wonder if the caring, awesome extended family I have is due in large part to my father's mother.
She is a wise, kind and intelligent woman, who, as one of her younger grandchildren, I have seen too little of, and not learnt enough from.
This makes me doubly sad this year, as she has had a bad year, with regular dialysis taking its toll, and a bad fall recently leaving a leg wound struggling to heal. And this year, she lacked the energy to do Christmas, staying at home and sleeping and recovering as she didn't feel up to it.
My folks, myself and Maeve called in to see her, and it as pleasing to hear her more with it than recently, and the leg is recovering.
Anyway, this Christmas I want to acknowledge the wonderful woman that is Great Grandma Molly to my Maeve. While I feel I haven't experienced directly your wisdom and guidance as much as I wish, I think I begin to appreciate how much your caring hands and wise words have shaped the loving, intelligent family I am a part of.
