I have been using the capabilities of Lissandra recently.
On July 15, 2016, I used the full potential of Waze for the first time. I brought Irene to the airport as she was going home to the province to be with her parents. Equally... I actually used mobile data for the first time.
Waze was telling me where exactly to go. And after heading for home, while stuck in traffic, I was messaging Migs via Facebook Messenger. It was an exhilarating and liberating experience. I had the world on the palm of my hand, and I could pretty much hold it anywhere I am.
I have explored something else as well: For playing online games, I intend to use Lissandra as a hotspot, while using mobile data as an Internet source. My issue with the Internet at home is that I share it with other people, so when someone uses it (especially if they use YouTube) the entire bandwidth goes to them, and I start to lag. So I am thinking of having my own "Internet" access, at least when playing computer games.
I have two major concerns with using Lissandra and mobile data as my Internet for gaming, which will determine the feasibility of this setup:
- Latency and consistency - Since this Internet connection is purely wireless, I have doubts in using it for proper usage. Wimpy has been LAN-cabled for the longest time (and using WiFi is fine because the router is LAN-cabled as well anyway.)
I tried the mobile data for the three major networks. So far Smart seems to be the most stable internet with the lowest ping. The average ping is about 80-90ms, with with instances when the ping would spike a bit to 200ms. Using it to play League of Legends was an ok experience. But I want to try Sun, for an attempt. For some reason Globe does not even want to connect properly to the 'Net.
- Data consumption - At a glimpse, I know that online gaming requires a stable Internet connection and not really a fast one, as there is not that much data being transmitted and received during a game. But mobile data has specific costs per MB/GB allocated for a specific amount of time as well, so I had to know 1) How much data is used while playing online games, and 2) What mobile data promos the network provides.
Thanks to a software, I managed to find out that League of Legends has a total network traffic of about 40mb for a game of about 40 minutes. Promos offered by Smart is 1GB for 3 days costing Php50, which is actually very ample. So far, I expect to play only on weekends, so I don't really need a plan that has both a long duration and high data. These "bursts" of data are fine.
............
Apart from using Lissandra as a hotspot for gaming, I have the mind to regularly use her with a data plan as well. Smart has a 500mb data plan which lasts for 30 days. And recently, I discovered the Broadband SIM of Smart provides 350MB per month for 3 months, and for free. I am currently using this. On ordinary days, I do not expect to use the Internet excessively, as Lissandra exists primarily for Facebook, its Messenger, and Viber.
I will see how long this setup will last.
