Slight problem: I've come to realize that I really don't think I'm cut out for nursing. The only type of nursing I'm interested in is labor and delivery, and the odds of getting into that field are very slim. Nursing is no longer the sure bet to get a job anymore. It's actually really hard to get a nursing job at all - let alone in a specific ( Read more... )

Knowing what you DON'T want to do is as important as figuring out what you DO want to do. Don't feel bad for saying no to something and don't beat yourself up or go back and revisit it a million times because people are giving you advice that says you should. If you will be miserable in nursing DON'T DO IT. And you don't have to justify it. You'll be miserable therefore it's not worth doing period. Who cares if someone else thinks it'd be awesome? Let them go do it then ( ... )

I know that's true, and it's pretty insightful - some of my closest friends haven't figured that out about me and seem frustrated that I'm always changing my mind. You know the other side of Jill of All Trades is "Master of None" and I think that's very true about me. I'm moderately good at several things but not really excellent at anything ( ... )

Maybe instead of thinking CAREER you can think project.

It is not immature to be unwilling to commit yourself to work that will make you unhappy. You've gotten temporary not-so-hot jobs when you had to. I mean, it's not like you're sitting there waiting for the world to come to you and hand you money. You've always gone out there and worked when you HAD to but big picture, long term? I think if you start seeing your eclecticism as a strength, you will see what you have to offer and what all you could do. You don't have to commit to another degree and more debt to prove you're responsible. You've already proved that by working at Starbucks and at the library and writing stuff that bores you when that's what you had to do. And you will do those things again if you need to but meanwhile just think about what it might be like if you let yourself run with your nature. Maybe it wouldn't work but what the hell -- it just might.

You're on to something with that. I'm still writing stuff that bores me because I have bills to pay, but maybe I DON'T have to come up with some big career plan. It's quite a liberating thought ( ... )
