Ah, today actually started late last night. I finally figured out how to get Babcom to talk to the iMac via a crossover cable. Babcom was having some trouble starting up, so I left it for the morning. When I awoke the next morning, I raced downstairs and started working on the transfer. I had the iMac aka PPS (Purple Piece of Shit) log into Babcom while I plugged Nydus into the other USB port on the iMac. Then I started the transfer and headed over to the munch... which I thought started at 10:00 AM. Little did I know I had entered the wrong time on the calendar on Cerebrate. Oh well, at first I thought everyone was running late, so I amused myself by reading almost the entire second half of Aliens: DNA War. I rechecked my watch (11:00 AM) and realized, when there still wasn't anyone there, I probably got the time wrong. I headed back home (after making a wrong turn and finding another route to the Santa Clara Office of Education) and checked on the status of the transfer. It was hung up on an item in use because I was copying everything from the startup disk, including the system folder. I repeatedly clicked "Continue" until it was out of the system folder and into other, juicier tidbits. Then I went off and made some bacon in the oven. Used up the whole package (who wants to live forever?) but didn't save the drippings (guess I'll have to use butter for the next grilled cheese). When I was done scarfing down the bacon, I checked again on the transfer and watched it tick down the last three files. DONE!!! Now the hard part. The second drive was 9GB (not 2GB like the startup disk), but it had all my movie and music files, so I had to have it too. Started the transfer and headed off (again) to the munch. I got there around 12:30 to find it in full swing. I chatted it up with someone I hadn't seen in a while (and was jonesing a bit for face to face time) while I perused the menu (I swear I almost have it memorized.). The bacon I finished off definitely helped and I was able to accurately gauge what I wanted and how much I wanted to spend (New Year's resolution). I picked the cheapest meal I could find (Grand Slam) and got that with a Cherry Coke (my version of coffee). The munch was great and there was a lot of talk about video games that I had actually played. I got a little depressed when the conversation switched to RPG's played in person. It brought up some of the frustrations I've had with "The RPG Curse", but I quickly pushed those feelings aside and focused on what the others were saying. Suffice to say I had a great time.
When I got home, I found the transfer still going strong (the 2GB took about 3 hours) with two hours left. I finished the Aliens book (good, a little predictable, but nothing compared to the Steve Perry Trilogy) and made a few calls to friends. Another current project I'm working on for Cerebrate is to have him start up with the Airport set to share its own network (not join another) by default. One of my friends is a Mac convert and immediately went to researching a solution for my problem. He said he'd get back to me a little later. My other friend is interested in merging music libraries. His library, he says, rivals mine. He's also ripping the entirety of my CD library (cause he has a dedicated internet connection that can easily look up the titles of the CD and the track names). Once he's done ripping and I'm done integrating my old MP3's into iTunes we will have a great merger and our libraries shall be combined; the two made one (but no gelflings shall be involved). By the time I finished up the phone calls, the transfer was complete. I set up both Babcom and PPS with their original security settings and powered them both down and powered up Cerebrate (He needs the monitor that Babcom was using.). It took about seven hours to transfer the entirety of Babcom onto Nydus. The time it took Cerebrate to transfer everything from Nydus? Fifteen minutes (I wonder if I have enough time to reach minimum safe distance.).
So now I'm taking a break from integrating my old MP3's into my iTunes library. A lot of the track names, artists, and album names are screwed up, which is hampering the process some. Plus, I'm getting a little misty over some of this music (Dark Crystal - Love Theme, Laurel and Owen (Love Theme) - The Final Countdown, Certain lyrics from Bambee's Bumble Bee "My heart skips a beat / When you walk in the room..../ You're my playboy, play toy, / lover, my friend. / I wanna be with you / Until the end.", Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, A lot of songs by Enya, and The Rabbit Dance by George Winston to name a few) which hasn't been played since 2005. It's just one big emotional flashback. I remember long nights with multiple FTP downloads, browsing the Appletalk network and Network Neighborhood (Macs are quite adaptable) and snurching files from both. Once the music is done (won't get done tonight) I'll just have three more projects on my plate. The first is to install OS 9.0 on the PPS. From there, I plan to upgrade it to 9.2 via some files that I need to download next weekend. Then I will have an OS 9.2 system folder with which to placate Classic. Then I can move in all my old shit and set up the drive exactly how I want it. The other two projects include completely wiping both Babcom and the iMac. Everything is backed up and I have almost no need for them anymore (just the OS conversion).
As for future plans, there's a party next week which I plan to attend. There's also going to be a strip off there which, from what others are saying, I will participate in, but don't expect to win (I will give it my best though). Hopefully I will end up getting the shit beat out of me as I don't have work the next day (which is why I prefer to play on Saturday instead of Friday).
