Kira sets a plate with two pancakes and a sliced banana down in front of her and then walks back to the stove. "Thanks," Cassie says.
"You're welcome," Kira says. She pours more batter into the pan on the stove and turns back to face the table. "I’m going to take a shower. Can you guys watch them?" she asks.
"I think we can handle it," Nick assures her and Cassie nods as she pours syrup onto her pancakes.
Once Kira's out of the room and she hears the bathroom door close Cassie speaks up, "These are really little."
"Yeah, but they're good," he says as he takes another bite of his pancakes.
Cassie cuts a piece with her fork and takes a bite.
He's right. They are good. She eats a couple more bites, but tries not to look too eager.
"Told you," he says and she glares at him as best as she can without breaking into a smile. "I'm always right."
"Always?" she asks and he raises an eyebrow, asking for proof. "What about that time you swore that cashier girl was a sniffer and you asked her to sniff the cup we had from that division guy and she said she had no idea what you were talking about but you wouldn't let it go until she called security?" Cassie teases.
"Hey! She could've just been pretending not to know what we were talking about," he argues. "She probably thought we were with division or something."
"Face it, that girl did not have any special abilities whatsoever. You were wrong."
"We'll never know," he says and takes a big bite of his pancakes. They eat in silence for a few seconds before Nick breaks it, "What's that smell?" Suddenly they both realize that they've forgotten about the pancakes on the stove. Before Cassie can reach the store, Nick moves the pan violently, flinging the pancakes and the pan against the back of the stove and wall.
"What did you do that for!" Cassie yells. Now she's going to have to clean up the mess he's made and Kira won't be too happy either.
"They were burning!" Nick says in his defense, standing next to her.
As she reaches out to pick up the pan, he reaches out and he knocks her arm down
and it touches the still red-hot burner.
Cassie yells and pulls her arm to her chest, cradling it with her other hand
instinctively.
Nick quickly shuts the burner off. "Cass, I'm sorry," he apologizes. "Let me
see." He pulls her burnt arm towards him by her hand, careful not to try and
hurt her more. He can clearly see where the two coils of the burner touched her arm, the area is turning dark pink and is starting to raise up. Nick moves to the freezer and pulls out one of the ice packs (they've learned to stock up on them since their first encounter with division) and places it on her burn. Cassie flinches at the contact of the ice pack being placed on her skin.
"What is it?! What happened?" Kira yells as she runs into the kitchen with wet hair, a t-shirt, and jeans still unbuttoned. As she enters the kitchen and sees that the scene look normal (part of the wall isn't missing nor is there any sign of blood or a struggle). "What happened?" she asks again though in a much calmer tone.
"This idiot burned your pancakes, threw them against the wall, and burned my arm," Cassie replies before Nick can say anything.
"Great," Kira rolls her eyes and walks out of the kitchen, presumably to finish getting dressed leaving Nick and Cassie to deal with the mess.
"I'm not cleaning this up," Cassie declares. She places the ice pack on the counter, walks back to her seat, picks up her fork, and continues eating her pancakes. "They're half-cold now," she mutters with a slight glance towards Nick who smirks at her (half teasing and half sorry, he did burn her arm) and starts opening up cabinets looking for something to clean with.
