Regina tried not to look in a hurry on her way to the stables. She had a bit of time to spend between her duties set by her mother and Regina fully intended spending it in the mansion’s stables.

“Daniel!” she called out walking in through the main doors. There was no answer.

Regina scowled. She knew that Daniel had a job to do and that meant he may not be around when it was most convenient to her.
She drew a breath and headed to Rocinante’s stall. Her horse was already aware of her presence and neighed lazily to get her attention.

Regina approached it and buried her hand under its thick mane patting and scratching it softly.
“Hey, girl! How have you been? Missed me much?” Regina giggled when Rocinante gave her a quiet whinny as if in response.

“She misses you and wishes you didn’t have to spend so much time away from her.” Daniel said emerging from the back entrance.
“That’s what she was telling me last night.”

As if to make Daniel more believable, Rocinante rubbed her face on Regina’s shoulder and she responded by scratching her horse gratefully at the top of her cheek, her favorite spot.

“Are you taking her out for a run?” Daniel busied himself around her.
“No, don’t prepare her, I don’t have much time. I’m here on a break,” she answered him without turning, still concentrating on her horse.
“So, does that mean I can have you all to myself?” he whispered next to her ear as he put his arms around her waist.

Regina was caught by surprise, her breath hitched and she instinctively pushed against his chest.

“Daniel...” she breathed as she felt her stomach stir. “The doors are wide open, we are in full view...”
Daniel withdrew his arms, stepped beside her and patted Rocinante’s mane.
“You’re right,” he admitted under his breath.
Regina put her hand over his under Rocinante’s mane and smiled naughtily.
“We can go out to the back, where we will not be as exposed and we can always say that we were going through Rocinante’s tack.”
Without saying a word, Daniel’s eyes glimmered and he rubbed his thumb on Regina’s hand before he headed first towards the back.

“Don’t worry, girl, I’ll take you out later... but now, I have to go through your tack and make sure we won’t waste any time when I return, yes?” Regina had no idea why she had to say that last part... it’s not like her mother was around to hear her but, on the other hand, she wasn’t used to lying either; hiding yes, but lying to someone’s face, even if that someone was her oppressive mother, did not sit well with her.

She gave a final soft squeeze of Rocinante’s muzzle and followed Daniel to the back, only to find him frittering around a saddle as he was waiting. He gave her one of his more-honest-than-honest, love-you-to-bits smiles making her heart skip a beat. Dear spirits of the world, she needed to kiss him; she had to or she would lose her mind. She ran and fell into his arms grasping handfuls of his shirt.

“I’ve missed you so much” she said against his chest and Daniel held her even tighter; but before he could answer her, she tugged on his shirt and brought his face closer to hers looking at him straight in his blue eyes.

Before he took her upper lip in his and sucked on it gently, Daniel cupped her cheek and whispered back “I’ve missed you, too...”
Regina returned the kiss warmly enjoying every second she spent in his touch. Her heart fluttered and she felt a tingling working its way up her fingertips as her hand found its way to his neck. She moaned quietly into his kiss.

Daniel broke their contact to take a breath, his other hand resting on her waist, and softly guided her towards the nearest wall, never breaking eye contact.

Regina shuddered as soon as her back found the wooden wall and kissed him again, more intensely this time. He pushed against her, their bodies making full contact.

He could feel her chest heaving faster and she could sense his heart racing. Regina pushed on his jaw with her thumb and Daniel let her mouth go with a quiet pop.
She inhaled deeply to catch her breath and he took in her face.

“Daniel, I don’t have much time, I have to go.”
“I know... it’s just a break.”
Regina nodded avoiding his eyes.
“You said you’d ride Rocinante later. Will I be able to see you?”
“I don’t know. It depends on the time and my mother’s mood. She may join me...” Regina’s face twisted in disappointment and slight worry.

Daniel stepped back and Regina hugged him tightly.
“We just need to be patient, don’t we?”
“Yes, we do.”
They broke the embrace and Daniel continued.
“Until then, until I could spend all day with you, I’ll miss you every moment we are apart.”
Regina’s eyes glistened in sadness, partly because it would take a while until that happened, as well as missing him too, but mostly because she felt she was causing so much pain to the man she loved.

She made an effort to smile at him before she placed a swift kiss on his lips.
“I will try my best to return on my own.”
And with that, she ran back to the mansion.

Title: "Over the phone, I'll be there"
Characters/Pairings: Ruby & Emma
Spoilers: 1x15 - Red Handed
Rating: G
Word Count: 1012
Warnings: None
Summary: Emma keeps company to Ruby over the phone.
Author's Notes: This is a missing scene from 1x15 - "Red Handed" when Emma calls Ruby and asks her to go to the toll bridge.
This fic was written for the provided prompt: "Sheriff Emma and Deputy Ruby."

This fic has not been beta-ed so all mistakes are my own~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Here's the thing-- the last time David went for a dream walk, he went to the toll bridge. You know the one? It's a crazy hunch, but I want you to take my bug
and go and see if he was there.”

Emma asked Ruby urgently as Emma needed her to move on. She knew the tall girl was fierce but since her fight with Granny, Ruby seemed to have lost all self-confidence. Under different circumstances, Emma would have no objection helping her slowly, nudging her towards the right direction and let her build her self-confidence up again at her own pace but now she was in a hurry and time was of the essence. She had to send Ruby to the toll bridge before David left the hospital.

“No, I could get somebody else to.” Ruby protested as anxiety caused a tingling sensation down her spine.

Emma tried to hide her frustration... if only she could channel Mary-Margaret who had a magic touch for this kind of thing.
“Ruby, you were great out there. I still don't know how you found him. You can do this.”

“I... I don't know” Ruby stammered hesitantly. She really wanted to help her friend in that situation but she couldn’t bring herself to take the leap. The clear urgency in Emma’s words brought her out of her thoughts.

“It's gonna be dark out soon. David's gonna be let out. If there is something there,
we've gotta get there first. We don't have time to argue, can you do this?”

Ruby swallowed hard... she really wanted to help her friend...

“Ruby, I’ll be on the phone with you the whole time if you like but I cannot make it on time there myself, so I’m asking you again... as a friend” Emma paused to take a breath, “will you do this?”

Ruby closed her eyes for a split second in concentration and opened them again decisively.
“Fine! I’ll do this...”
Emma sighed in relief.
“Thanks, Ruby! Now go and get the keys to my bug from my desk, top right drawer, in the wooden pencil box.”
Emma heard the swooshing and the tapping of Ruby’s heels on the floor.

“Got them. I’m heading to your car. I’ll call you in a sec. You’d better pick up or I change my mind and turn back...” Ruby hang up hastily without waiting for an answer.

Emma held her mobile in her hand as she made her way out of the hospital. She knew that Ruby would see it through now even if Emma didn’t answer her phone but, nevertheless, Emma wanted to be there for her friend.

It wasn’t only the recent incident with Granny that revealed how sensitive Ruby was. Emma knew from the very first moment they met that evening at the reception when Emma was looking for a room: Ruby had the softest and most sensitive of hearts that’s why she needed a hard exterior.

Emma was out of the hospital when the phone vibrated in her hand. She answered it even before the ringtone was set off.

“Ruby, where are you?” Emma asked curious.
“I’m making the left turn down Green Lane so I can take the ring road out of Storybrooke to the north and the toll bridge, happy now?”
Emma couldn’t suppress her chuckle.
“More than happy, Ruby” she answered as she kept smiling.
“I don’t see why you find this so amusing... You did pick up my call even before the second tone; worried much?”

“What can I say, Ruby?” Emma chuckled again at getting caught. “You’re my friend and I already told you that I would be there for you... even if it’s only through the phone.”
“Don’t worry, Sheriff, no one is calling you a liar or a bad friend” Ruby tried to lighten up as she made her way to the ring road. An awkward moment of silence followed.
“How’s traffic?” Emma asked changing the subject.
“Virtually none... and by the way, if I get caught, you’ll have to tell your deputies to let me off since I’m doing errand for the Sherriff’s Office.” Ruby said half joking, half seriously.
“Why would you get caught?” between trying to find her keys to the patrol car Emma couldn’t follow Ruby’s thoughts.
“Erm... you know... the speed limit.”
“Ruby! Just try to be sensible! It’s not far anyway! It shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes to get there...”
Emma heard Ruby laughing.
“Oh, my God, Ruby! Just... argh! You’re pulling my leg, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, Emma... but not much. We’re in a hurry, remember?”
Emma took a moment to get in the patrol car before she answered with a sigh “Yes, I do.”

A few more minutes passed as Ruby was slowing down trying not to miss the spot close to the toll bridge where she’d have to leave the car and continue on foot.

“Emma... I’m almost there...” Ruby sounded anxious.
“Don’t worry, Ruby. You’re only looking for anything out of place. I know you can do it. Just be yourself like you did when we were looking earlier for David together. Keep watching around you as soon as you get out of the car... I’m also going to be here on the phone, I’m not going anywhere, okay?”

Ruby murmured an “okay” as she pulled over and stopped the car.
She opened the door and stepped out.

“I mean, what am I even looking for?” she asked still baffled and taking extra care not to slip and fall. She wasn’t exactly dressed for a search in the forest.
“Anything out of the ordinary, something that doesn’t belong there.” Emma’s voice sounded serious and anxious with a touch of excitement.

Emma felt it in her gut that Ruby was about to find something, something really important. She’d finally get a break at her case if she was to prove David’s innocence. She knew he had nothing to do with Kathryn’s disappearance. Even Ruby agreed with her the other day when she dropped by Granny’s during her lunch break.
