Kahlan was shivering in her sleep but she wasn’t cold enough as to register and wake her up. The night was growing colder as time passed and their campfire was about to extinguish.
The cold filled her dreams with ice and snow bringing long forgotten memories of winter in Aydindril to the surface.

Training was mostly focused on studies and mock mediations within the walls and warmth of the Confessors Palace and only once they would be taken out for their survival courses.
Mistress Jaya would take three groups of twelve confessors of different ages at the nearest mountain ridge and instruct them how to survive under such unfriendly conditions.
Kahlan found herself in her tent with Dennee, Alana and Kai huddled together trying to warm up. They all hated it but they knew that it would be very useful if they were sent to the north parts of the Midlands. At least that’s what they kept telling themselves...
Suddenly, she was back in the dormitory with the same company but it was so warm and cozy under her covers... she stirred and realised she was dreaming.
Opening her eyes, she found Richard leaning over her.
‘I got you an early Solstice present... it’s a new blanket for your bedroll to keep you warm. Go back to sleep.’
Kahlan didn’t need more encouragement. She smiled in gratitude and closed her eyes free to dream of summer in the Midlands...

Title: "Run!"
Prompt: "the past & the chace"
Characters/Pairings: Kahlan, Dennee
Words: 548
Rating: G
Timeline: missing scene 1x01 - Prophecy
Summary: D’Harans caught up with Kahlan and Dennee on their way to the Barrier.
‘Dennee, GO!’ Kahlan’s shout cut through the air as she was putting the last of their things in the saddle bags while Dennee was already on her horse.
Dennee kicked softly on her horse’s ribs and caught with the corner of her eye Kahlan climbing at her horse just as she called it forward.
They had left Aydindril about to be besieged by D’Haran forces almost four days ago and, although they had taken extra care to conceal their tracks, a D’Haran search party was on their trail for days. Kahlan figured it was only a matter of time before they caught up.
And now they were here...
Both knew that the barrier wasn’t too far but the land they had to cross was tricky. They would soon be clear of the cover the forest provided and they would have to cross through deep ravines sculpted by the rivers in the area for a long time that currently laid empty and sandy as the dry season was already upon them. The latter was what troubled Kahlan most as they would certainly have to let go off their horses and then continue on foot. If only they could put some distance between them. Come to think of it, Kahlan realised that she and her sister may have the advantage on the D’Harans as their confessor dresses and necessary supplies were a lot lighter than the heavy armours and weapons their pursuers carried.
‘Kahlaaaan!’ Dennee’s scream brought her out of her thoughts and instinctively ducked, an arrow missing her head only for mere inches. The next few moments all seemed a blur to Kahlan.
Arrows started flying all around them and then a dull thud reached her ears over the hissing of the arrows and the soft breeze, hooves pounding the ground, her heart trying to beat its way out of her chest, on top of Dennee’s gasp. Life started on slow motion; it seemed ages between the realisation of her sister getting shot by an arrow and turning to see her struggling to stay upright on her saddle, her grip on the reins loosening.
Rage started swelling in her chest but the situation demanded her cool, to think her actions through, as life around her returned to normal speed. She had to think of their mission, her mission. They made a sharp turn towards the dried ravines; Kahlan thought they may provide a better chance of gaining a bit of time and ground. She had to take care of Dennee... her little sister.
Dennee rolled off her horse and into the ravine as soon as they reached inclined ground. Kahlan stopped and followed her downhill on foot. Their life flashed through her mind... taking care of each other over scrapped knees, fights against bullies, but mostly supporting each other once their father was free of his wife’s confessor touch. How they reached Aydindril and how it felt like home...
The past weighed heavily on her mission... she was feeling already torn between her sister’s well-being and her duty. She knew from the beginning though that it may come to that; Dennee did too. Nevertheless, it didn’t make it any easier on her.
She had to separate the chase from the past and find a way out in the present.

Title: "Let’s wait here."
Prompt: "Christmas and red stars"
Characters/Pairings: Kahlan/Richard, mentions of (Zedd, Cara, Dennee, Kahlan’s mother)
Words: 319
Rating: G
Timeline: AU!modern day
Summary: Kahlan and Richard’s preparations for Christmas dinner are almost finished before their guests arrive.
Kahlan put the last decoration on the Christmas tree and stepped back to take the image in. There were some of the decorations Zedd, her husband’s grandfather had given her, the crib was an older set, one of the few things she had left of her mother’s, and she followed Dennee’s, her sister, suggestion of adding a bit of cotton and a few touches of silver glitter on top of it to imitate fresh snow.
She rested her hand on her belly that was now fairly pronounced leaving no doubt that she was with child. Richard, her husband, walked up to her from behind and put his arms over hers.
‘It looks great! Just give me a moment to plug in the lights,’ he said and Kahlan’s smile widened.
‘There!’ he exclaimed and stood beside her as soon as they started blinking rhythmically.
‘Richard, they are all red’ she giggled.
‘Is it bad?’ he asked curious but a grin appeared in his face.
‘Well, not really but... let me guess... these were the last ones on the shelf, weren’t they?’ Kahlan knew that her husband was very enthusiastic about Christmas but he was also working too many hours and no matter how good his intentions were with the preparations, he scarcely got the time to match them.
Richard cleared his throat.
‘Maybe’ he answered mysteriously.
Kahlan leaned on him and kissed him swiftly on his cheek.
‘It’s all right... they look like little red stars’ she tried to lighten up.
‘Let’s hope that they will guide our friends to our new home soon, I’m hungry...’
‘Indeed. Did you hear from Zedd, Cara and Dennee?’
‘Yes. Cara texted me they’ll be here any minute now.’
‘Let’s wait for them here... under the red stars?’ she smiled at him.
Richard didn’t answer but held his wife closer and wished it took a few more moments longer for their friends to arrive.
