I just finished a delightful call with the DC Dept of Tax and Revenue. Actually...it was a delightful call. Despite all of the bureacractic hoops and irregularities that I have thus far experienced in the District, everyone that I have spoken with that works for the District has been very nice to me and as helpful as they can.

I received a bill in the mail from them, last week, for alomst a thousand dollars. They claimed that I misrepresented my tax liability on my return and I owe them money and fees. *sigh* I was NOT happy about this. I'll cut through the details of my stages of irritation and move to this morning, when I decided that I would calmly inquire with them the justification for the modification of my return, converting from a refund to a bill. Though I was ready to go on a tirade about the obvious lack of math and reading skills held by the tax dept employees and how fed up I was with having to do everything at least three times before it is right, when interacting with the District, in the end, I decided that being polite and expressing genuine concern would be the best route.

I am so glad that I didn't try to take the high ground on this. In fact, the entire mistake was mine. :-) After discussing the return with them, we discovered that I had completed the 1/2 year resident impact on line 13b and in other areas, but I forgot to place the total exemption amount on the main line: 13. So...my 1/2 year resident credit was not applied since I didn't actually enter the amount in the right place on the form. I guess I need to work on my own math and reading skills a little...

In the end, it was a polite and brief conversation, and they said that they will mail my refund to me in 5-7 days. Thank you. Have a nice day.

I think I will.

:-)
