Local music/movie stuff

I seem to have fallen down on entries related to local music and arts stuff.

Last Friday, my old friends Gloryhound (if you were here a couple of years ago you may remember the weekly setlists from their show at Tribeca) released an EP on Friday. There was a show at the Seahorse to celebrate and there was a large and lively crowd--just like old times, only louder. I have not been up that late in a while!

The EP's cover art deserves mention just because the CD packaging has the worn outline you see on old LP jackets. I thought that was very nifty!

Last weekend my brother, and friend of his, and I went over to the Carleton for an open mic session. Adam Baldwin was the headliner and there were a few rather cool new-to-me artists, as well as a guest vocalist from the Leslie Spit Treeo.

I refrained from nagging Adam about when his record will be released, but I may have asked his dad about it.

That evening we all went to a screening of a locally-made movie called Faith, Fraud, and Minimum Wage, which was written by the nephew of my supervisor, adapted from his play. My brother worked in the locations department on the film. It's inspired by an incident a few years ago in which a vision of Christ appeared on the outside wall of a Tim Horton's. This version features a teenage girl with many questions, a young priest with few answers, a dad who is more lost than his daughter, and a Chihuahua called Mr. Waffles. Among others. It was touching and funny and featured Callum Keith Rennie as the dad, if you need another reason to look it up once it arrives on DVD.

Joel Plaskett show this Saturday--I need to pick up my tickets.

And now we are more or less caught up!
