Title:Veritas 8 Author: Concupid Pairing: Howard/Vince Rating: PG-13 Fandon: The Mighty Boosh Warnings: I’m a Howince tease Summary: Vince and Howard spend some quality time on the bouncy castle
But I think I understand why Vince blew it here, and it's not because he suggested that they get physical. It's because he tried to downplay it as something to just get over with, just practice, not meaning anything... the contrast between their understandings and expectations about romance and sex has just met in a head-on collision. Howard doesn't do casual flings!
But the really sad thing, which has just become clear to me in this chapter, is that Vince is pitching it that way because he doesn't think he could ever do better than that--he thinks Howard only wants somebody intellectual, and he doesn't meet that standard, so he'd rather have a little bit of Howard than nothing at all. And he thinks that downplaying it as "practice" and promising Howard that nobody will have to know will make Howard feel reassured and more inclined to go through with it--even though it IS far more important to Vince than he's letting on. So they're close together than they think, really. But it does indeed make me sad that Vince is convinced that Howard could never want him because he's "only" fun to be with instead of an intellectual, and that he's already thinking about being left behind if Howard marries Marie.
Not that THAT will happen, of course... I hope. I mean, I'm pretty sure she and Sienna have it all figured out and are comparing notes about how deeply in denial these two are! It's really adorable that Sienna reassured Vince that nothing happened between Marie and Howard, even as I'm giggling at Vince not realizing why she'd make an effort to reassure him about that.
But I love that the kiss(es) happen so spontaneously, because it just feels right; there's no calculation there, nothing to doubt for either of them. And I melted into a small blue puddle after reading Vince's poignant thoughts about feeling small and protected in Howard's arms, and about how Howard was the first person he hadn't found mildly disappointing. (One of the pitfalls of always believing the best of people: you are frequently disappointed.) And I hope that the trend of Howard not disappointing Vince will continue...
