So, there will be a kitchen. It will not look like this any more:
Everything's going. Cabinets, counter, lights, appliances... walls... Ditch the crapwood paneling, repair the plaster and/or re-drywall, and paint pale-pale blueish gray. Like "Glass Bead". Maybe a wall's worth of "Velvet Sky" for accent, probably not.
Cabinets from Domain Cabinets Direct, in Russian Birch Shaker (it's a honey-maple type stain), probably with a basic stainless bar pull.
Countertops,
as stated, steel gray granite, leathered finish.
Flooring, Armstrong Alterna groutable vinyl, "Honeysuckle". It's grey and taupe, not quite as yellow in person as this image looks. Same stuff we used in the bathroom, with convenient leftover grout and adhesive in the basement.
Backsplash in light colored tile with an accent stripe, without the 4" countertop lip. A concept kind of like what these people did, but with a white/grey marbled ceramic and a blue glass long-skinny-mosaic stripe, which may or may not be these exact tiles.
Refrigerator Kemore Elite Trio obtained from Craigslist, Frigidaire Gallery glass-top electric slide-in range also from Craigslist. Dishwasher will be whatever seems reasonable that week at some big-box store. Hood will hang over the stove, which puts it hanging kinda in the middle of the room.
Sink might be this or that, but we're keeping the faucet we currently have because it's awesome.
There's seating, so we need 3 stools. I'm not really sure what to get. Armless definitely. Backless probably; low-backed possible, but high-backed is pretty much out. Swivel... optional. Probably wooden, not the big heavy metal base. Most likely very simple (i.e. first image) because we'll be out of money, but that last one is by a woodworker who I saw at NEFFA last year, and if I had $900 to support the arts, I'd totally buy his furniture.
Lighting mostly invisible, and not entirely planned out yet. Over-cabinet cove light by LED strip. Undercabinet we just re-use what we've got (thanks to IKEA). Along the main counter run, basic 6" recessed cans. Over the peninsula seating area and over the sink are two options that we could do something a bit decorative. A pendant? Track lighting with spots and pendants? A bar-type hanging fixture? Except I'm not sure what I want and how it would blend in. So many options, that's a post for another time, I think.
