Windows Won't Update

Question/Problem: Windows Update won't work: Error 8024A000

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows Vista Home Premium

Web Browser: Google Chrome 14.0.835.202

Your level of experience: Beginner-ish?

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then? Since I've upgraded to a 320gb harddrive from a 250gb one, which was just last week.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? Basically everything? I gave up last Sunday because I was so frustrated, but I'll try to trace my steps:

- I followed this link after google-ing "Windows Update Error 8024A000", which led me to this link. I installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology download from there, restarted the computer, but that didn't work. Went to the Intel website directly and tried to auto-detect other drivers I needed updated. Everything seems to be up to date after another restart and the Error 8024A000 went away but Windows still wouldn't update, saying "the services is not running" and that I may have to restart my computer. I did just that and it still says the same thing when I try to update.

- I also tried to use the Microsoft Fix It stuff (two applications) from their website... That did diddly-squat.

- I looked at this page, which had a Command Prompt solution. I'm not very familiar with Command Prompt so I psyched myself out when I read that I had to manually type out a long list of commands. (Could I just copy and paste that out? Should I do it line by line and press enter for each line?) It also said I could copy the whole thing out and save it into a WindowsUpdate.BAT file but it doesn't say where/which folder I should save it into.

- I tried downloading the Windows Update Agent from the Windows website in hopes that a re-install would just put everything back to how it usually is but the installation process always stops itself, saying something about the Power Shell thing not working.

I'm stuck with this Intel Rapid Storage Technology icon sitting in my system tray that I don't fully understand, along with a huge headache. So, someone please save me from this agony? (There may have been some crying involved throughout this whole ordeal, yes.)

Thanks in advance!
