Dear Mother,
Happy New Year! We’re having a bit of a party, nothing fancy, just some nibbles and things. It would be difficult to have a fancy party anyway, as there are just a couple of us here.
Yes, I had a very nice Christmas. Yes, dinner was more than adequate. Yes, I’m getting enough to eat. Yes, the tutoring is going well. Really Mother, I’ll be seventeen in April; don’t you think it’s time you started treating me like an adult?
The tutoring is going well. It’s very nice to be able to study without all the others distracting me. I’m learning so much I never knew before! I find the quiet very conducive to my concentration, and I fully expect to do extremely well on my NEWTs this spring.
Of course I missed you on Christmas, but this opportunity was just too good to pass up. I’m sure you’ll understand and appreciate how important this is for me. Did Andromeda manage to get my gifts to you properly? I didn’t like trusting her with them, but it was by far the easiest way to manage. Thank you very much for all my lovely gifts. I especially like the locket, and I look forward to wearing it for some suitable occasion. I hope the family had an enjoyable holiday and I hope Regulus didn’t get sick again this year. I wonder what you will do when you find out what I did on my holidays? I’m having another lesson soon, so I’m going to end this now. Love to everyone except Andromeda.
Your daughter
