the thora hird of indie pop bothers the crisp scoffer one more time...

"i want to be with people who i'm worthy of..."

such ruddy arrogance. let's forget for a moment ithobel campbell sings a song to a TREE on the genital waves' first album, lets forget the fact she can't sing for toffee and her songs are at best lyrically doggerel. but that arrogance just - aaaaaargh! i knew there was a reason belle and sebastian got so much better once she swung her fey, headscarf wearing hook

yet still "weathershow" remains one of the greatest songs of the last decade and parts of the album (if you ignore the ruddy singer and the lyrics) are rather beautiful. bloody typical, so much to hate yet so much that's so - well - not terrible you can't fully hate her

i'll have to dig out the comedy version i did of the godawful "birdsong from the dear green place..." that's on the back of the album. there was a time when this record and all that ithobel stood for was the brunt of mine and atommickbrane found contempt with. and it's still there. everything about the whole indie subculture that is wrong is on this album and "fold your hands", that sense of defensive superiority, that wilful shambling amateurism, the arrogance and aloofness, the preciousness, the cloying tweeness. my god it's a good world when we're shot of the woman

anyway. rant over. as you all were...
