Rosiemary's Baby

Sep 03, 2006 10:50

I went to my first baby shower yesterday. The "shower" involved a cascade of presents over the mother and father -- he in black leather trousers and NIN T-shirt, she in a tight psychedelic dress which allowed us to see the sprog undulating beneath her skin. I gave them one of those baby books, with a kitten on the cover, that the baby can touch and bite, as well as a copy of The Gruffalo.

A floating yellow balloon marked the house where this was taking place. There were more balloons inside and, as the afternoon wore on, they were taken down for helium breaths and squeaky talks. I saw people I hadn't seen for a long time -- Sarah, Ed, Hester, Kim, Ben and Moz -- and others who I saw very little this summer. Where did the summer go?

The carpet didn't get ruined by any red wine, beer, cookies, rasperry pies, cakes, chocolate eclairs or crisps. However, the baby's father did get leftover pie on his hair when he insulted one of the football hooligans present. People began to leave and the living room, which could barely hold half of the party at one point, suddenly had all of us sitting in a semi-circle facing the mom-to-be. The soon-to-be-baby would have tripped out if she could have seen all these adults, dressed in black & semi-drunk, staring at her bumpness and talking of her imminent arrival into this world.
