Summary: Prompt: “Sam is there when the ice finally breaks.” Sam’s PoV.
Sam is there when the ice finally breaks, curled up in a corner of his own mind and body, and tired of watching but with nothing else to do. Being in a cage is one thing - he’s been trapped before. Being stuck in a hole with this much energy, anger simmering on the surface and power crackling along the edges of his consciousness, is claustrophobic.
They’ve fought, the angels, and Sam thinks the word angel is a misleading one because that was *brutal*. They left their inadequate human hosts so they could do it properly and Sam, free within his own body but trapped without, bent his face to his knees and tried to dull the ringing in his ears. He struggles to keep track of time in the cage, and couldn’t tell how long it went on for if anyone ever had the opportunity to ask.
When the violence stops Sam feels it in his entire body. The tremors have stopped and the ringing in his ears is only residual and that power, restrained once more, is back to pushing against his skin as if it wants to crawl inside him. But the anger is gone. There is something else in its place, yes, but the anger is *gone*.
Sam understands when Lucifer takes over his body again, still raw from his clash with Michael. He doesn’t want to, but he catches glimpses of thousands of years of regret, love and loneliness and betrayal. He can see regret on Adam’s face too, flashes of Michael he doesn’t know are escaping onto the face of his host. Michael looks at Lucifer like he can see right through Sam, and Sam is sure that Lucifer is looking at his brother in the same way.
Lucifer crawls across the unyielding dirt of their cage and touches Michael’s face and Michael understands. The angels need human bodies to do this, and Sam, try as he might, can’t hide from it. Michael lets Lucifer push inside him, apologies in the curve of his spine and the flush on his cheeks and the shine in his eyes, and even on his own face, Adam is nowhere to be seen. Sam can feel sensations bleeding through into his consciousness, desperate kisses, the flesh of Michael’s shoulder between Lucifer’s teeth and heat. The slide of Lucifer inside his brother’s body and his grief that this will only ever be temporary.
They angels lose control in the downward spiral of their desire and Sam is thankful that, every time this happens, he blacks out before the end. It is quiet when he eventually comes back to himself after the last time, and the maddening pressure has eased enough for him to breathe easily. But a moment later it is too quiet, and for the first time, Sam can feel all that energy and power focussed on himself, and it *hurts*. He was there when the ice had finally broken, but the angels need something else to play with now. And Sam can’t keep track of time in the pit, but it stretches out slow. He doesn’t know when, but the next thing Michael and Lucifer will break is him.
