[QM] #128 - Some people just have a face that sticks in your mind

"Some people just have a face that sticks in your mind."

A flash of brunette hair in a crowd and Rose's heart skips a beat until she remembers it's not possible for him to be there. A sighting of a long brown overcoat in a shop window brings back the memory of him coming in to her mum's flat on Christmas Day after the battle with the Sycorax. He was all bright smiles and so very different from her Doctor. Mickey's hand in hers for comfort doesn't feel right. It doesn't feel wrong, it just doesn't have the same comforting feeling that she instantly received from the Doctor when his hand was in hers.

It was the little things that Rose wasn't prepared for when the doors between their realities closed that were her undoing. She'd begun to move on that day in Bad Wolf Bay when she'd said her final good-byes to him. It had been hard but she'd done it and it was only the little reminders that crept through the wall she'd built that brought the pain back that she'd never see him again.

As it had been when he regenerated and she'd missed the big ears, 'daft old face' and the Northern accent, Rose began to view the painful reminders of the past as a comforting blanket. She might not ever be able to experience the same feeling of comfort when his palm touched hers and their fingers laced but she had the memory. She might never see that manic big smile that was common to both versions but she had countless times that she could draw on to pull it up whenever she wanted or needed it.

There was a part of her that wondered if he was doing the same thing. If there was a flash of blond that would remind him of her or if he looked around the TARDIS remembering her there. Would it be too hard for him not seeing her in the control room and he shut her away in a compartment? She hoped it wasn't. She hoped that he pulled out the memory of her now and again to feel the comforting warmth of a hug when he needed it.
