iTunes Genius

So one of the best things about my new ipod, apart from the fact that I'm now able to watch the latest episodes of SNL, The Office, etc, on the long commute to and from Joondalup every day, is iTunes Genius. Basically it takes information about the songs in your iTunes and it knows that people who downloaded X also downloaded Y. I think it also has something to do with BPM and era and stuff as well, because the playlists it makes for me are amazing in how accurate they are. You start with one song, switch on Genius, and the next song it plays is one that goes perfectly with it. It goes right through everything, too. On the walk to and from the shop just now I've gone from Fire and Rain to the Scissor Sisters and Sheryl Crow. Interestingly, it seems that the common thread in the music I listen to is Toto, because every time I have set it to Genius, Toto has come up somewhere in every single playlist. And I only have two of their songs.

At the moment we have a German backpacker staying with us, and my iTunes is currently host to both his and my ipods, and music that we have both imported. I like a lot of his stuff - Blink 182, poppy hip hop, and this awesome New Zealand rock compilation with bands I've never heard of but that are awesome. Until I get my external hard drive fixed, or at least the 50+ gigs of music and audiobooks extracted from it, my entire music library and his, along with all my podcasts and a bunch of videos and every photo on my hard drive fit comfortably on my new ipod with space to spare. So as I've been scanning through looking for Harry Nilsson (none, alas) I've found stuff of his and ended up playing it, so it's not like I've been ignoring it completely. And yet - so far, Genius has not ONCE put one of his songs into my playlist. So whatever its criteria for determining which songs go with which, it has decided that my music and Sebastian's have NO cross over potential.

So that's all I had to say, really. I'm going to go make beetroot chocolate cupcakes now.
